That's not necessarily true . Many forms if not all teach you discipline , patience , and self control which are are all characteristics aimed towards self improvement . Also keep in mind many people lack all three qualities so most people just want to swing there arms around in a fight .
I agree with Shane8592. If you are in a school with instructors who value the philosophy, self-improvement in the areas he mentioned will be required as part of the agreement to learn there, not word for word, but same principles and meaning. It was where I learned both Karate and Aikido.
