What are some reasons that people are scared of clowns?

I'm asking this because I'm working on a theory of why women usually don't get along or like each other......I know, it seems like Apples and Oranges, but I believe I have a good theory.....I just wanna see if I'm thinking right or if I'm way off base....and the answers given here will help.....8)

Maybe something occurred in their childhood, to cause them to feel fright when seeing or thinking of clowns.

Nothing seriously traumatic needs to happen for clowns to be freaky!

True. They are just Freaking scary in the first place.

Because they don't want to float with all the other dead kids down here. Never understood what was so wrong with me teaching people to float. You want a balloon NAFTA? You just have to come down here and get it, they float...and when you're down here, with me, YOU'LL FLOAT TOO!!!

Of course I can, I'm one of the best clowns out there. Though I am stuck in the sewer so you shall have to reach down here to get it.
Report as
Definitely....just let me run home real quick so I can grab my inhaler.....8)
Report as
Lmao!! That only works once bub, you should know that!
Report as
But It's a REALLY big inhaler......8)
For the life of me I can't remember what the kid screams when he sprays his inhaler.....something about acid, right??
Report as
"This is battery acid, you slime!" If it's a big inhaler then I might a need like 35 years to sleep it off instead of 30, that'll give you a few more years before we meet again but I'll get you then!

No real details yet but this some of the speculation and overview of it, I must say I really hope they don't kill this movie.
Report as
Yeah.....I hate when a movie is re-made for no apparent reason other than money....
Report as
Well this movie is being remade for the graphics really, they want to really capture the terror that Pennywise is supposed to bring out in people. I don't see who they could get to replace the original Pennywise though, I know Johnny Depp was one of the considerations but I don't think he could pull it off.

Some people (like me) may just be freaked out by the fact that they always smile, have creepy make-up and a weird freaky laugh. Something also may have happened to them involving a clown when they were a child. Also their faces are covered! Anyone could be under the paint/mask. I also find that clowns can be presented as a scary presence!

Usually it's the fact that their faces are covered - either with pant or a mask, or that their features are so cartoonish. You never really know what's really under all that, and to some people (even if clowns are trying to be funny), that can be a scary thing. Sort of the fear of the unknown.

Plus, a lot of clown humor (from historical perspective) is based on the misfortune of others - pranking, making fun of others, or startling people with loud noises, etc... Some people just don't like that sort of thing.

They are so happy and fun, that it makes it sort of scary. They are hiding themselves and ALWAYS smile. The clowns that have the bloody knives and are peering through your window, now, that's a different story. That's just CREEPY.

What if someone was smiling ALL the time... wouldn't that creep you out? Then that colourful, in-your-face attire and makeup can get strange.

I'm not afraid of clowns unless they are the horror-film ones. May I ask how the two subjects of clown fears and women not getting along relate?

Helpful (3) Fun (2) Thanks for voting Comments (12)
Report as
Thanks for asking.....OK, well, it's no secret that women tend to not get along with each other too often, they are usually judging one another and talkin smack to/about each other.....with me so far? Well, a lot of people seem to be on board with the fact that clowns are scary due to the make-up and/or covering of the face which leads people to believe that they are for some reason un-trustworthy....well, who wears make-up too?.....women....and it's almost always women that are afraid of or don't trust clowns.....so the make-up itself seems to be the corresponding similarity.....women are covering their faces and no one really knows what's underneath the make-up except for maybe a select few close friends....
Report as
Wow, that's really insightful. I like your thinking, though a touch stereotypical, it's good. It does seem that they could be hiding/not knowing what is really under the makeup. Are you going to do anything with this theory, or just leave it be?
Report as
Well, honestly, it's just ONE of the many stupid crazy things that I think of on a daily basis.....wasn't really plannin on doin anything with it.....but now ya have me thinkin!! 8)
Report as
:) I don't know what you could do with it, besides maybe write a paper, but I'm sure that you can think of something!
Report as
It's definitely not Pullitzer Prize material, but it is an interesting perspective right?
Report as
I totally agree! It's something I never would have thought of. It's a big step, but an insightful one!
Report as
Naf, you could write a scientific paper on this. Start interviewing a lot of heavily made up women. You should definitely wear a clown suit during the interviews.
Report as
OMG Hippy.....I just fell off the couch laughing!!!!!! LMAO!!!!
Report as
I like the clown suit idea... but they wouldn't know who's underneath the make up. :D

you really want to piss a bunch of women off Naf??
Go up to the Made up ones in that clown suit, and ask them that!! Lmao!!

Probably because of the movie "It" for one good reason and that they keep their face covered with paint that sort of hides their identity or whatever. And that under all that paint just on the outside they're all funny and silly when really the people afraid of them are wondering if their like mean and cruel or something else not fitting in the category of being nice and friendly. I have no clue, but I had a friend who was deathly afraid of clowns and actually cried one time at school because she was shown a video of one acting silly and singing....

I freakin hate clowns because they remind me of my aunt Sophie. I just remember her wearing a ton of makeup with bright red lips giving me a big wet kiss on the cheek. She smelled like "old lady" and my head was always stuck between her gigantic boobs when she hugged me. Oh crap, now I'm gonna have those old aunt Sophie nightmares again.

its just like a snake. some people are scared of them and some people have them as a pet. a natural fear.
It could also be from horror movies or shows you watch. they make you think of clowns as predators or enemies, which they're most likely not.

First of all clowns are creepy. Second of all. It depends on the women. Just like men. Not everyone has to get along.... Also.... I'm confused. What does being scared of clowns predict a getting along with women theory???

Well usually clowns were made to be in a curious they are meant to be happy and joyful all of the time but now and days with movies and tv shows they turn them into evil people. and that could be one of the reasons why some people are afraid of clowns.

To me, they move unpredictably and it seems like you can't tell when they're going to get into your "personal space", whether it be with their body or an object like a crazy animal balloon that makes weird squeaky sounds when they're being made. It could also be it with the women-clown theory because there are some women who are untrustworthy that hide behind a lot of make up so you can't read their faces...THATS IT !!! You (meaning "one") can't "READ THEIR FACES" behind the make-up making them scary and unpredictable. I HAVE seen women with a lot of make-up who were sweet and maybe kinda maybe "dumb"(sorry, not too nice) but their make-up was applied in a different manner though there was lots of it. Hey Nafta, I need you to go to comments...

What's up?
Report as
Do you remember that question you asked a while back, I think it was something like," Did you know people can donate your body to science?" and I answered it. Well, my dad died last week (he was in a bad car wreck a year ago and couldn't heal because of his age) and he DID have paperwork for it. I will fill you in how it went down, just for learning outposts because we all like to learn, a little later on when there aren't so many younger people on. It's very interesting .

Clowns laugh all the time, and that scares people, because they can't figure out what it is they're laughing at. So they get paranoid and freak out because they think the clowns are laughing at them. That's one reason. Another reason could be man's fear of juggling and pie throwing.
