why back in the day when you got married you put cans on the back of your car? what did that represent?

Tying tin cans to the back of the newlywed's car recalls the ancient tradition of making loud noise to frighten away evil spirits .

It's a way to get attention to let everyone see how happy you are. The cans make noise along with some vigorous horn honking.

The tin cans rattled behind the car & they drove like that to their honeymoon destination& also along with the tin cans was the words "just married" written with a spraycan of shaving cream on the back & front car windows. It all was to let the world know another couple had tied the knot. It did make a mess of the windows but back then you hoped you only got married once. It was Aussie tradition & of course it was VB cans tied on the back. ah those were the days. and then the divorce parties, that's a whole nother Aussie tradition.
