Why do we grow old and die?

Many people wonder this question but can never find the answer they are really looking for what do you think?

Why not?
"Who wants to live forever..." (Thanks, Freddie Mercury!)
I don't wonder, 'cause I know why... and, I'll share this Top Secret info:
Our bodies deteriorate over time, just like all living (and many non-living) things; organs get worn out & fail, or cease working, causing.... Death.
"Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky..." (Thanks, Kansas! Although, I must say, I do not believe the earth will last forever, but...)
Try adding more classic rock to your listening diet, you'll find the answers to many of life's perplexing questions... 8)

I have a habit of "speaking in lyrics." I know a LOT of music, and often, lyrics pop into my head that fit into the situation/conversation at the moment... :)

I can tell you that the reason out bodies break down and get weak as we age is the same thing that keeps us alive. Oxygen.

Because of the sin of Adam and Eve. Without their sin we wouldn't grow old or die. We would go to heaven when God wanted us to. But we wouldn't need to die to get there

Because you can't grow young.

Because of Adam and Eve's sin. His said that because we disobeyed him, we are being punished by not being able to live forever.

Because the alternative is living forever, and that would suck. The world would be infinitely more over-populated than it already is, and we'd all have to spend eternity in the same consciousness. No thank you. And where would be the motivation to take care of yourself and doing the right things? How would we get to indulge in one of humanity's greatest, oldest pastimes: killing each other? The only upside is that we wouldn't be able to put dead people on a pedestal and pretend they were demigods compared to us. Other than that, it would be hell on Earth.

Because our body stops reproducing cells at a certain age and we start to lose cells till we die. i don't think anybody knows why we do that though, maybe it was Adam and eve, we don't really know, it could just be some natural thing of life. We will never really know.

Ever seen metal rust? Aging is like that. Oxygen wears away, the elements do their wear and tear, and your body deteriorates and rebuilds by the second. There is nothing to do with Adam or Eve. See this link for more:

I'll go for the Adam and Eve answer, but add something.
Even the largest rock will disappear in time to nothing but sand, the sand will turn to dust as all things will.

Well after a thousand years of being awesome, I would have soared everywhere, seen it all, done it all, said it all, sang it all, wrote it all, et cetera et cetera et cetera.....

Boredom would set in then what?????

Very true...
No matter how unbelievably, amazing, incredibly awesome something is, I'll get bored with it after a while... even if "a while" means 100's or 1,000's of years. Usually, I'm bored a lot sooner... like within 10 minutes, ha!!
Great taste in music, BTW... 8)

Telomeres.

If older men father children with longer telomeres, is it a safe assumption that those children will be exceptionally healthier by nature?

That's the kind of answer that sends me searching for information and makes it worthwhile being on Ask. I just learned something new. Thanks.
Report as
No problem. It's actually a simple answer but at the same time one we're just unraveling.

@torn-
There is some interesting work being done in that line of thought. The problem is that older men also father children more prone to autism and other birth defects, just like older women are. It's kind of a crap shoot.
My pregnancy came in just under the age line where they start testing the crap out of you for everything.

The potential certainly seems amazing:) Thanks, Skep.

Eventually, all things wear out and return to dust-material things are not eternal including our human bodies.Age, disease and death of all living things are tied directly to the Second Law of Thermodynamics (sometimes referred to as the Law of Increasing Entropy), which states that usable energy in the universe available for work is decaying or running down to a state of inert uniformity, or heat death. The universe is winding down which would logically mean the universe was created with plenty of usable energy-so the question one might logically ask: "Who wound up the clock?" According to Scripture, the moment of least entropy is fully described in Genesis 1. Applied to the whole universe, this is a fundamental contradiction to the "chaos to cosmos, all by itself" nature of evolutionary doctrine. The old law of entropy, along with "the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:2) which accompanied it, will be gone once and for all-all because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and that He lives!

Death Through Adam and Eve.
" When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race. His sin spread death throughout all the world, so everything began to grow old and die."
(Romans 5:12) Living Bible
Very few people believe this Verse, but they do know the answer. Others listen to philosophies of men. "Don't let others spoil your faith and joy with their philosophies, their wrong and shallow answers built on men's thoughts and ideas, instead of on what Christ has said." (Colossians 2:8) Living Bible. This answer is for the person that asked the question. Please research the Bible your self, prove to your self what the Bible really teaches. People have a lot of theories about death, and why we die. But none them are correct unless it agrees with what the Bible say's.
