The Chrysler 5.7 litre V8 shuts off cylinders. Does this really save on fuel?

the same car weight is being pulled so the same energy is required. I suspect that the fuel savings claim is at least a little fanciful.

At steady speeds on level roads, as little as 20 or 30 HP is needed.
It must save gas to run on 4 out of 8.
Otherwise it would never have gotten into production models.
