The song "Sweet Caroline" is the theme song for Boston because it shows solidarity with the city. The song was Sung as a tribute to Caroline Kennedy the daughter of the late President John .F. Kennedy.

It began as just a song they played over the intercom as sort of an intermission. But it quickly became an institution among the faithful rabid Fenway fans. The song does have a sort of a tie to Massachusetts. Neil Diamond was apparently inspired to write the song after seeing a picture of young Caroline Kennedy. http://askville.amazon.com/Red-Sox-fans-sing-Sweet-Caroline-Fenway-7th-inning-stretch/AnswerViewer.do?requestId=5244637
