Is it right to teach the theory of evolution in public school?

My friends are all christian and want to rebel saying that if they teach evolution then they should teach christianity . I'm just not sure what to think.

Report as

Evolution is not a religious belief but established, evidence based science. Creationism/Christianity is a religion and cannot be taught in public schools as it violates the Constitution- this has been upheld repeatedly by the courts.

Science is taught in science classes, not religion- evolution is supported by 150 years of scientific evidence. Your friends are basically making a claim similar to saying chemistry shouldn't be taught in schools unless you teach alchemy too, or that when talking about the germ theory of disease you should also teach disease is caused by demons. Or perhaps in physics we should not only teach astronomy but astrology as well.

What evidence is there for evolution. If so, then why do they call it Theory!
Many education departments are now realizing that Darwins theory was wrong!
Report as
Theory, lillypad, in scientific terms means something that hasn't been disproven. It doesn't mean something that could be wrong.

Second, many education departments are not now realizing Darwin's theory is all wrong. You must be reading apologetics, who can't even make an argument.
Report as
The entire last 150 years of scientific evidence all supports evolution- we've WITNESSED it in both the lab and the wild.

And you folks need to realize Darwin published in 1859- his hypothesis has been updated and refined since then, but natural selection has been proven over and over.

Evolution is a proven science, therefore it is included in all public education as any other science like biology, chemistry, etc. evolution doesn't support or deny any religion. If schools were to begin teaching Christian creation stories then they would also have to teach Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Wiccan, etc. etc. etc.
Schools are for learning science, churches are for learning religions.

There is a separation between church and state, so no religion should be endorsed. Tell you friends that is Christianity is taught, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, etc.

You can ask them to teach Christianity, but I can promise you that it's not going to work. Not only do millions of people hate Christianity, they'd say that if you taught that, it'd be offensive to other religions. They cannot force you to believe in evolution. You can chose what you want to believe. At my school, they compared it to Creationism and talked about how some of the theories have been disproved. So they're not saying that we evolved from microorganisms that randomly sprouted legs and transformed into humans over millions of years. It's not like they're lying to you. They're just stating a bunch of unproven facts because a lot if people don't believe in Christianity. Those people include the state that requires you to be taught that. You could ask your principle, and he or she will give you a ton of gibberish about state laws and how they're making "right" decisions. As Christians, we know that it's not right to teach things that contradict the Bible and aren't even proven. Besides, school is supposed to teach you things that'll be beneficial to you in life. Being an evolutionist isn't going to get you good money.

Incorrect on all counts! Evolution is a proven science. Most of the world does not hate Christians (70% of the US is Christian) And if you want any job in the field of medicine, biology, or chemistry, you need to learn evolution. For that matter if you want to be accepted at 95% of the big named colleges you need to learn evolution.

By that logic a Satanist should be able to march into a school and demand they teach Satanism because Christianity is taught. The Buddhists and Wiccans could do the same.

It's okay, public schools are a secular institution. I do believe that if they are teaching the theory of evolution they should teach other theories too, like the theory of intelligent design. And for people that say that evolution is a proven science, it's not. A theory by definition is an idea, not a proven fact.

I could have sworn that everything is a theory when it comes to science. Most people believe gravity is real and proven by science, but in reality it's just a theory.
Report as
No, once a theory is proven it becomes a law. Gravity is called the law of gravity now. You can have a theory that if you jump of a building you won't hit the sidewalk but that won't stop you from going splat.
Report as
Swirrvin. You are incorrect, it is the theory of gravity. And you are wrong about what a scientific theory is....

There is a difference...between a theory....and a scientific theory.
Did you not learn this in school?
A scientific HYPOTHESIS, is equal to an english theory.
A scientific THEORY is proven.

The theory of evolution has not been proven. There are missing links in the chain.

No, it has been proven countless times.

Gravity is still gravity until you can prove it not to be......!
The TRUTH of gravity is that if you drop something, it goes DOWN,not up, not sideways!
Being in outerspace proved that the law of Gravity is a fact!!
Report as
Let's not forget "intelligent design" isn't even a hypothesis- there is zero scientific evidence supporting it. The scientific community rejects it- there is no "controversy" among scientists on evolution.

You may also want to note that a "law" is just a mathematical expression of a "theory", not some higher level.

@Lily-

That you drop something and it falls is only evidence it falls- it does not prove that it falls because of gravitation. Without any other evidence, you could easily state things fall because invisible fairies carry things downwards.
Gravitation is a theory mostly supported by math- there is actually less hard evidence for gravitation or atomic theory than there is for evolution.

Yes, it is right. Evolution is an actual fact, where if you really wish to see it happen then you can visit a lab or somewhere and see it happen under a microscope. Christianity is not a fact. The difference between Christianity and evolution is that evolution does not require you to believe it to be true. Whereas Christianity requires you to believe it but when you do believe it you unconsciously act in ways that make it true. Thus, it's not true anyway.

Please explain how evolution is an actual fact?
Is there actual evidence where the archeologist has found an
'in-between' stage where a fish has evolved into some land roaving animal? NO!(we need evidence)
Can you show me where an ape has evolved enough to progressed to think up some invention on his own? NO!
(We need evidence)
Can you show me a time when you did not have to show-tell-instruct-program a monkey to accomplish a task(where he could figure it out on his own-take it apart and rebuild it?
NO!(we need evidence)
The fossiles that you find is not evidence of evolution. That is evidence of sudden devastating flooding and mass graves where you find ocean shell on mountaintops alongside mass burials of animals and fish! This flooding caused the shells to
Not open their shells (as in dying) it was so sudden, the shells are found still in their closed state! And in fossile formed by layers of mud!
That my friend is no sign of evolution!
That my friend was God's flood in
The day of Noah!

you need to change your wording to
Creation vs. evolution( and not use the word Christianity- that coveys a religion) .
creationism is not a religion, but the fact that the world was created by a grand design who had to have a grand DESIGN-ER! vs. the big bang!
you may also contact the Christian law association for help on this(free).
ALSO:Why would you teach theory instead of Truth! Wouldnt it be wasteing time?
Theories change all the time.
Truth doesnt change!
hope these suggestions are of help to you.....God bless you in standing up for your religious rights . thats what good Christians do!

1) Creationism is a belief of the religious, it is not at all considered a science.
2) The big bang has nothing to do with evolution, they're two separate theories.
3) Theories don't "change all the time" when new evidence is found it sometimes alters minor debates within the theory.
4) The word "Truth" comes from the old English word "Treowth" which meant Faithful/Faith.
5) Schools are for facts, churches are for faith. Keep your creation out of schools and we won't insist evolution be taught in your churches.
Report as
Creation is not a religion! We worship a CREATOR/not the creatION!
It IS a SCIENCE of studying and learn that which the Creator made. And the science of how wonderfully He has created each , to its unique ability
to undertake that which He has created it to do, whether it is animal or plant, human or any creature!
ALSO:The THEORY of evolution and the THEORY OF the big bang Is just that------aTheory!!!!!
No one can prove it!thats why they call it a theory!!...........
Yet there is proof all around us of a grand Designer! None of what you see could have 'just happened'. It had to start spmewhere by Someone!!
When God said"LET THERE BE"!!.....
THAT, my friend , WAS the big BANG!!

Report as
Schools are for FACTS you said?
Then why do they teach THEORY!
Schools should be to teach people to
THINK! And explore and reason..... Not to just be given facts to accept and not question!
Report as
Creationism has zero evidence, it never has produced a single bit of proof to support it, therefore it is NOT a science. A scientific theory is a collection of facts, you're making the common mistake of confusing it with the English literature term theory, which means hunch, or guess...

evolution is a fact.
Schools do teach people to use their critical thinking skills, it's your churches that say "don't ask just pray!"

Evolution is a science with facts and data supporting it. Widely accepted by 99.999% of biologists as fact. Where as Christianity is a religion with no facts or data supporting it. So no, there is nothing wrong with teaching evolution and not Christianity. If you want to teach religion in a public school, move to a country that is a theocracy, not a democracy.

Since creationism has zero scientific support it has no place in a science classroom.

And by your logic we must then waste time teaching EVERY rwligion's creation myth alongside your myth. Hope you want your kids learning the Hindu creation story. And the pagan ones, Wiccan, Buddhist, Satanist...
