So do catholics only use mary to pray for them? If so when do they ask her to pray? and how do you pray and ask her, like how does it start?

The best prayer to Mary is the "Hail Mary," as follows:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Hail = hello. Grace = God's help. Thee = you. Thou = you. Thy = your.
Or you can start by just saying, Jesus help me, or Mary help me, or St. Joseph help me. You can add what you want them to help you with. I often say, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, help me get through this (day, or mess, or whatever); or help me with (someone's name); or help (someone's name).

Why talk to mary instead of god himself

There is nothing at all wrong with going directly to God, who loves us perfectly, when we pray. Jesus, who is God, suffered terribly and died for us, to show us how much God loves us.
Have you ever asked your Mom for something instead of going directly to your Dad: pretty much the same thing.
Also, it's more respectful of God to go to him through Mary, or one of the other Saints, than to go directly to him.

No, we don't only pray to the Blessed Mother but also to the Father,Son and Holy spirit. I have three favorite saints that I pray to so they will talk to God and hear my prayer, kinda like a middle man.The saying of the rosary is a devotion to Mary, the mother of God. Usually when I pray I talk like I would speak to a regular human being.

What a shame.. It's like being a parent and having your child ask the babysitter to ask u for something.

Not really.I just love those saints and sometimes I need all the help I can get. I see your point though.
