I have to take a blood test on Thursday. They want me to fast, but I want to take Plaquenil (for lupus) that morning. It's for insurance.

I was told to fast before taking a blood test in order to get new health insurance. If I ate a little bit of food (like 1/2 a banana) and took my plaquenil, would that be totally detrimental to the test, or could it possibly help me get insurance? I'm worried about my pre-existing condition hindering my ability to get health insurance. Any ideas?

They want you to fast to get the best results for each test. Even 1/2 a banana can give false results. If you're trying to hide your condition, it's not worth it. If you get the insurance under false pretenses and then something happens with the preexisting condition they won't cover it and they'll cancel your insurance. Always best to be honest. Good luck!

I'm not trying to hide the condition because I doubt they would do the required test to check for Lupus, and even still its on my medical record. I guess I'm not sure what would happen, I'm unclear as to how the whole process works. The lupus can cause some wonky stuff in my body and my understanding is that the Plaquenil evens out certain levels that might show up in a blood test. I will take your advice as I don't want to get in trouble in the end. Thanks :)

I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood. I thought you were trying to hide it. Your best bet is to call your doctor and ask if they want you to take the pill before the test or not.

Sorry, I should have phrased better.

I'm not sure what you're going for here but I've always had a sip or two to take my meds if I needed them. I don't think the banana is a good ideas. Lots of potassium. I'd eat a cracker, if you really have to eat.

Skip the banana-anything you eat will skew the test results, and your fasting glucose will be too high. But it should be ok for you to take your Plaquinil without eating-I'm pretty sure it can be taken either with or without food, and it shouldn't affect your blood test at all. I take Plaquinil too, and I always take it before my frequent fasting blood tests. I eat as soon as the test is over, and I've never had a problem. BTW, it's ok to drink water before the test, so swallowing the pill is easy. Drinking water doesn't affect your test, and makes your veins easier for the nurse to be able to draw your blood.

Take your meds and drink plenty of water. You need to be well hydrated when having blood tests. Don't listen to people who tell you not to drink water. But, do not eat anything.
