Why can't we Americans get together and throw all our money into a big pile and then split it evenly

Report as

Why can't we? B/c those that refuse to work for it do not deserve it.

Ok. First off, that is called socialism. Second, the reason it does not is you assume the next guy will take care of it, so they lose motivation. For example, say 2 guys make tennis shoes for a living, and guy 1 makes about 5 pairs a day, but guy 2 makes 15 pairs a day, guy 2 realizes that he doesn't need to try hard because he won't get rewarded for better quality/quantity. Therefor, lose motivation

No it is not socialism. Well, then it depends on your definition of socialism. If you define socialism as "throwing in all our money into a big pile and then split it evenly", then yes it is. But socialism, in the Marxist sense, is summed up by the creed "from each according to ability; to each according to need". What this says is that you are free to contribute to society by anyway you want to and can take as much as you want to. It also is described as a classless, money-less, stateless society based upon common ownership of the means of production. Common ownership is the ownership of things like natural resources, factories and farmland by all the people of the planet, which essentially is ownership by no one. This then presupposes democratic control of these as the people now own the places where they work, and can thus began production for use and to meet human/community/individual needs, instead of whether it is profitable to do something, deciding as the human race what to build, innovate etc...

Christopho wise - Did you know that most of the wealthy people in this country were NOT born into it? They worked long and hard for it....
Recently, PNC Wealth Management conducted a survey of people with more than $500,000 free to invest as they like, a fair definition of “wealthy,” and possibly “millionaire” once you begin including home equity and other assets. Only 6% of those surveyed earned their money from inheritance alone. 69% earned their wealth mostly by trading time and effort for money, or by “working.”

why is it fair that some are born rich and get the best education and opportunities and some are born poor? How is that fair?
What you're not getting is that SOMEONE worked hard for their children to have an advantage. They looked into the future and decided that they needed to provide for future generations. The worked and invested wisely. If someone is willing to put in the effort and apply themselves, teach themselves, learn from others, they reap the reward of all they sacrificed to acheive their goals. That is totally fair. You seem to be envious. Envy gets you nowhere but poverty of mind, body and soul.

Report as
It's us a bit sad but thats what school is for, maybe public school isn't the best but if you make excellent grades and work hard and the parent cares enough about the child's future to help study, than that kid will make it to college. College may be the hardest Time of that person life working two jobs but that person will be able to are for there own children and yes his children will have it easier, but that because when worked hard for that. He knew one day if he worked hard enough his kids would never go through what he did. I'm in high school and you know what I will work hard and make excellent scores on my graduation test. My family is poor, college is going to be the hardest Time of my life and I probably will have to work to jobs. And if I ever have kids they will have it easier but I will teach them to appreciate every bit of it. Its up to a person how there children will grow up. Your rights it's unfair for children to be born into families that didn't make it. But thank god we live in a country where that kid can.

Because that is an idiotic method of implementing socialism. There are far better ways to do it, though in the end, socialism will always fail anyway. Besides, if everyone split there money evenly, the EVERYONE would be poor, it's how socialism works, you can't get around it, and no person with half a brain is going to agree to such an idiotic method. Here are some more examples of why our country has become lazy... we go to the Middle west to get our oil..well gee that make perfect sense cuz we have Alaska with an ass load of oil that we cant dig into ourselves. Here is another one that you may understand better... we hire people from other countries, for instance China. they make a ton of things for us and we buy them. China definitely isn't in the same situation as the U.S. We could create soooo many more jobs here if we didnt lean on China so much! (btw this is nothing against China. actually china is smart and benefiting off the entire deal )

Okay there are a lot of uninformed answers here, while then again, it depends on what you mean by socialism/communism. First, in Marxian terms, socialism and communism are the same thing. Second socialism is a completely new form of society and social arrangements. It is the common ownership of the means of production. This entails the absence of money, government/state and class. Common ownership means that the entire human race will own the natural resources of the planet, the places where they work; the farms, factories etc... So this demands democracy to enable people to control these things and then to decide what to produce to fulfill human needs, as production is not for profit but for use, this is done on a global, regional and local level. People are then allowed to decide what ever they want to do with their lives and take as much as they need/desire, thus money is eliminated.

Helpful Fun Thanks for voting Comments (1)
Report as
Statelessness comes out of this as classes are eliminated as you put the means of production under the control of humanity(no one), so the state is then eliminated. Class develop basic along certain relations to the mode of production, with the capitalist system creating two classes; the capitalists and the proletariat/workers. The capitalists own the means of production, while the workers are forced to sell their labor power to obtain a wage. Labor power is the ability to work, not the labor. This labor power is a commodity that creates value which is then owned by the capitalist. The state arises to keep the capitalists in control and suppress the workers(as seen in the USSR and the US). The state began as a way to keep slave owners in power, and to then rule over slaves. It then developed to it the modern nation-states.

We could do that if enough people supported it with their votes, but it wouldn't satisfy anyone - not even the people who would gain wealth. This, or a variant of it, has been tried many times in history (Soviet Union, Red China, Greece, Cuba, etc). Whenever people have tried socialism work has been divorced from rewards. The result is that producers produce less (because they know they will keep less of what they work to produce) so there is less total production/wealth to be divided. This shrinking pie makes everyone poorer - except, of course, the government who decides who gets what, and grows increasingly larger - because it becomes the only avenue to a good life. You still wind up with a ruling class with the only way to beat the system being engaging in illegal activity. Finally the ruling class evolves into a group of lazy bureaucrats, instead of entrepreneurial producers. I suggest you read "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. It will help you to understand this better. As Margaret Thatcher said, “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.” That says it in a nutshell. I hope this helps.

When there is no reward for improving fellow man's life, little progress is made in man's plight to rise above simple survival. If Altruism was an inherent trait that people based their decision on 100% of the time, then maybe dividing everything up equally would somehow magically work. But that is not a universal trait that commands every human being's decision making to put out more effort to make something happen than others. By improving other people's lives, why shouldn't their take out of the post be larger..... amirite? see more opinions on http://amirite.com
