You have gotten enough criticism here, so I'm just gonna say its ok to do a mistake AS long as you learn from them and want to resolve the issue. But what you are doing is extremely harmful to your hamster, it could cause lung problems, skin irritation, and other illnesses that could harm or kill your pet. Discontinue this and never try this again... here's some things you could know... ( I AM NOT A HAMSTER CAREGIVER, I AM A PRO MOUSE OWNER) but they are much alike, but you should still do your research. The sooner the better.

But rodents are very clean creatures, have you seen your hamster clean itself and rub its whiskers and all? That's their bathing and it works well. Reasons your hamster could be smelling is because of lack of a clean cage, lack of space, or lack of bedding; causing urine and waste to collect in his fur, which is very unhealthy.

I know lots more if you want other information; including caging, foods and snacks, home made toys, and other stuff that will make your hamsters life heavenly... Good luck and please take care.

Glad to hear it! And not a problem, I'm just glad your doing something about it! Some people would just not do it and not give a care in the world. *high-five* :D

But may I? Lemme here what size of cage he's in first before you buy a cage. Is it a tank? If so, go on Youtube and find about the same size your hamsters living in so I can see the link. I'll be able to tell you other problems "if there are any" and what your dealing with.

Toys:
Toilet paper rolls - these are harmless, and are fun to chew on.
Tissue Boxes - Not with colored paper! If injested it could hurt them, get an ordinarry small cardboard box. They love to burrow in these and its allot more fun for them.
Wheel - Does your hamster have a wheel? This gives him excercise and keeps him from getting chunky, and even reduces stress at times.
1 Plain White Sheet Paper - Throw a piece of that stuff in there they chew on this like no tomorrow. "no colored"
Chew Log - Its a rodent toy, thats edible and can be chewn on! Bought in Wal-mart and Pet shops. Not exspensive.

Keep in mind, you don't need EVERY TOY, that could make is cage stuffy. Toys are to keep him chewing on things and have fun. But did you know that a rodents teeth never stop growing? This is why they chew so much, to narrow them down so they don't over grow and cause starvation. This is important... Be sure that he has things to chew on.

Anything else??? XDXD You have a good one

ok umm his is with the ines and i wanna buy him a glass one because i think he broke a line from chewing on it and with the tissue box if i put him in the tissue box can i just leave him in there or should i make a barrier so he cant escape and with the tissue paper can it be scented cause we have scented and if they chew on it can they swallow it and how big jus one square of what ooo i need to learn a lot lolol xD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdND4eOcSFo this is kinda how his cage looks but the box is purple n the cage part is black btw forward to 1:02 to see the cage part

Don't take this personal, but it would be much easier if I could send you EVERYTHING you'd need to know through email... My emails a fake, so as soon as I finish sending you a email of Hamster care and stuff, no more contact. Only if you want, cause if not then I'll answer here in the comments. But just saying it would be easier and you'd get allot more information. Again, too un-comfortable, then I'll just type everything I know in this comment thing.

Hamsters don't take dust baths. They are NOT chinchillas and you can KILL your hamster doing this! PLEASE do some research on your hamster.

i went to petco and they told me to use dust bath

NOT for a hamster!

Robo hamsters also love rolling around in a container full of bathing sand. Select a long dish bowl (preferably plastic) and purchase chinchilla sand (it's VERY important you don't purchase chinchilla DUST, as this is very harmful to these tiny guys), fill it up and watch your little darling roll around in delight.

Ok this can kill them. I would you this special powder they have at the bet stores to bathe them. I have some for mine. You just pick them up sprinkle a little on them rub it in softly then get a wash cloth and wipe the access off.

Don't trap your hamster in a container of ANY type of powder! It will inhale and ingest it .. NEITHER is healthy for the little critter.

WHAT ARE YOU THINKING! You don't need to 'bath' a hamster...nor do you have to torture it by holding it captive inside a small container with this 'power' stuff you mentioned. THAT is just plain cruel! DON"T do that!

im sorry!
im new to having a hamster D;

That's ok .. just remember...it needs to breath clean air ... at all times.

If you don't know how to do something with your pet, don't be afraid to ask questions. That's how you learn. You will make a good pet owner .. because you care enough to ask.
Report as
ts jus tht he smells like fish and people on ask and a worker at petco told me chinchilla dust but ima go buy chinchilla sand chus i read online right now that thats what they use
Report as
Don't worry so much about how he smells...It might be offensive to you .. but, to an animal smelly perfumes or soaps are extremely offensive because they have such a keen sense of smell.

Just love him .. no matter WHAT he smells like.
Report as
Well, that worker at Petco should know more about how to handle their animals. That's how THEY may treat their pets, but that is not the 'right' way to treat pets.
Report as
i mean i dont care how he smells but like the aroma smells like period blood and it makes me nauseous so thats why all u want is to reduce the smell
Report as
Are you changing his bedding often enough?
Report as
yes i am every week but sometimes every 2 weeks i do every 2 weeks chus i run out of bedding and have to wait for my moms paycheck but mostly every week

I saw it in this TV program for animals... and it was a situation about a hamster going to the hospital because it dropped while the owner was drying its fur... after bathing it with WATER and shampoo i guess. .. even though im not a total expert i think u are able to bath it but with water..
