How can you tell a sprain apart from a break or fracture?

Because it hurts like hell but it is not discolored.

Depending on the severity of the injury, you can't, at least not without an x-ray, or having a doctor examine you. A few site that might help give you some basic differences...

Yeah. That was only a one sentence answer question. But since there's a bone sticking out of my skin I'm pretty sure I broke it.

If there was a bone sticking out of your skin, you wouldn't be on Ask - you'd be in shock and screaming, or passed out from the pain. Not to mention, it would totally be discolored at that point - because you know blood and all that from where the skin was ruptured.

A sprain is usually characterized by reactionary pain, while a fracture is characterized by constant pain. With a sprain, you may be able to walk, although the pain usually intensifies as you walk, but walking on a fractured ankle is usually impossible.
