Why does my church constantly ask for money. I know they need money for expenses but its a weekly thing and a real turn-off.

Are all religions focused so much with getting money or is it a normal part of running a church.

Report as

Churches dont make money any other way. With mortgages and insurance and utilities and maintenance and supplies and salaries and missiinary support and other things to pay they have to ask for donations every sunday. Its not like the entire months budget gets donated on the first sunday of each month and everything is free and clear after that. Most churches ask for donations each week and just hope it adds up to enough to cover the budget for that month. Esp with so many self-righteous tightwads who apparently think churches run on nothing but air. As Christ followers it is our responsibility and our HONOR to support Gods work on earth thru supporting His Church by supporting our specific church congregation and do it with a glad, generous, happy heart, not with sneering selfrighteous resentment.

Churches function 100% on donations. They can't function without it. Some churches use pressure tactics which aren't good. Jesus had a lot to say about giving. He said it was a good test of the heart. Jews in his time gave a tithe of 10% of their gross income. With all of the various gift offerings it was estimated to be over 50%. God doesn't need our money. But when you realize that the ability to earn money comes from God you know you are entrusted with responsibility. There are some great lessons in the New Testament. It's not my place to tell you what to give. The reality is that most people give very little of their money or time.

Sometimes it takes contributions to get things paid for but I know what you mean. Do they pass around a plate to make you feel obligated to leave a donation? If so they shouldn't be doing that. A person shouldn't feel obligated to do something for it should come from the heart when one wants to give. Tithing is not for everyone so a church shouldn't make you feel that way

Tithing is for everyone. God gives us everything and is willing to split it with us, 90-10. We get the 90 and God gets the 10. I think that is a more than fair split.

Yes I agree with you to a point but not when the church throws the donation plate down you're throat. You give a donation what you're heart feels like giving, not a plain amount. So you say 10% what a person makes. Many a people probably can't afford to tith so if they can't do it should they be sent away because of it. If that's what you agree with then you are plain wrong. If I felt obligated like that then there's no need for me to feel welcome at any church that does it

I don't know about all religions but Yes Islam does not run on donations. But you will find many mosques and madrasah they collect donations once a week ie Fridays and monthly collections. There is no compulsion to donate a particular amount but people donate generously for the cause of humanity and for the maintenance of the mosques and the staff.

Jehovah's Witnesses do not ask for contributions. Jehovah wants you to give out of a generous heart as he's given to us generously. there are donation boxes. and you give as much or as little as you desire once a month the congregation is informed of what the money was used for. sometimes an event happens we're money will be asked for to help others. contributions are never discussed. how many people gave , or how much.Mt 6:3,4

That's why I like the meetings of Jehovah's Witnesses. They never pass a collection plate at any of their meetings. They don't even talk about it really. There is a contribution box next to the wall, but the way it's marked you really almost can't tell that it is a contribution box.

I have always wondered as to why we should help god. Cannot an infinite God, by practicing suitable economy, manage his affairs without our assistance? Must the master subsist upon the charity of his slaves? I would like people to ask themselves that question too.

Back of every superstition, you will find self-interest. Nothing was ever sacrificed for the god, which the priest could not use. I must say that the history tends to show that the sacerdotal class prefers revenue without religion to religion without revenue.

Priesthood professes the aristocracy of beggary. To rob the pew -- priests made begging a dignified trade. It has been a profligate beggar — a generous pirate. When it can't burn, It begs. It's true that ministers teach charity. But then, all beggars teach that, others should give.

After all, churches are like other corporations, they have to be managed. Theology is now run on business principles. The hell now is for the poor only. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a poor man to get into heaven, or for a rich man to get into hell. The priests cannot afford to send the rich who pays their salaries to hell.

I don't think it's up to the priests to determine who goes where. I don't believe God needs our money. I think he likes to see who will help other people, who will meet needs. Bottom line, most people are selfish and want to hold onto what they have.
Report as
Do you suppose the only way to help other people is to help them through church? Or, do you suppose, that non-Christians are any less charitable than the Christians? Because the trend seems to be the perfect opposite.

Daing pious you make lots of good points. Great comments. I'm suprised that religious dude that made a comment about what I had to say didn't go up against you

Long_Road- the ability to do anything, comes from god. So your money responsibility bit is frivolous. Pious666- We need to help our fellow man. God doesn't need our help as an individual. For god is not a single individual, and yet IT is all single Individuals. Go beyond duality, enter the paradox. That is where the power and knowledge lies.

If people would willing give their tithes and a liberal offering, the church staff would not need to remind everyone every week of the need for money.

How often did you hear of Jesus Christ collecting money? What are you collecting money for? The love of God will move one to give his sheeps the word free of charge. I am sadden by your question because you appear to want to learn the truth and what is in the Bible; but your big Distraction is the passing of the "collection plate."

Almighty God said "give freely." - Matthew 10:8. Jesus Christ preached from village to village and city to city and not once did he hear of him "asking for money in return." He healed the sick; gave sight to the blind, resurrected the dead and not once did he say - please put money into my collection plate.

Why do they collect in some churches - yes, it is to defray some of the expense but also so they can live a very comfortable life. Take a look at the most beautiful church you can find - and if you are a member - ask for some financial help - and then let me know what they say or do? Some churches collect all of the time and the pastor lives in total luxury while members of his congregation are struggling to pay their rent and electric bills.

Your right it seems its never enough but the priests are constantly roaming to Europe. Something is wrong here.
Report as
The ones that live in luxury aren't fooling God. The Bible days they will be judged more severely because they were over others and took better care if themselves.

That's about the only way they can get money and if something at the church brakes or mow functions then they can replace it or they can help other people with that money.
