Question for religious people, and a question for Atheists.

Question for the religious: if we have a soul, then why do we have a brain?. Modern science has already proven that conciousness and thinking comes from our brain.
Question for atheists: How do you explain all these sightings of ghosts, and all these people who have died and gone to some kind of hell and heaven?

Report as

Ghost "sightings" are the result of over active imaginations and a lack of critical thinking. The vast majority of claims have zero corroboration, the rest perfectly natural explanations. Ever notice that "ghost sightings" only happen to people who already believe in ghosts? It's called confirmation bias- they interpret an occurrence as being the work of "spirits" because they are predisposed to think that's probable. They never look for the actual cause.

As for so-called "near death experiences"- they have a scientific explanation. Research has shown NDEs are hallucinations caused by lack of oxygen to the brain, and they occur to roughly 18% of people resuscitated from cardiac death. The same 18% that tend to have unusually elevated blood pressure. This phenomenon can be replicated with electrodes, drugs like ketamine, and exposure to high g-forces (pilots during NASA training used to experience them once the hit 9 g in the centrifuge test and passed out).
People who experience an NDE "see" what their religion or culture has conditioned them to see- it's why Hindus in India see very different things than Christians from the US.

I remember watching a paranormal show on t.v and one ghost reporter said he was a skeptic until he actually seen a ghost. Why is this?

Good answer.
Report as
It's TV- it's for entertainment. I doubt he was actually a skeptic- a skeptic would look for all possible answers first.
Report as
TV shows (particularly religious programs and supernatural programs) like to parade out someone they claim was an unbeliever or skeptic so they can give the "miraculous conversion" story. It's a common tactic used by sham artists since the days of Barnum- people are more willing to suspend disbelief of they hear a fantastical story about someone else who didn't believe but "saw the light".
Report as
I recently became aware that now there's a show on TV that uses celebrity's to tell their personal ghost stories, so ghosts must be real.
Report as
Come on skep, how much proof do we need.
Report as
There isn't any testable evidence, just anecdotal stories from campy tv shows.

Ok, thanks, guys!

the body is a container that contain the soul while the body works to serve this soul. They are connected, when the body falls the soul will too exp: (heart attack) when the soul falls the body does too, exp: (sudden death while the body suffers nothing wrong).

I have never ever seen a ghost or an orb or anything like that. I don't believe they exist because I have never seen any, and all the ghost-hunting tv shows and pictures on the internet aren't evidence to me. I also don't believe people have souls, or in god and heavan and hell.

If everything is just from your brain, why does it not think when you die? What happens when you die? Those not believing in soul have not yet found a cause for natural death, far as I know.

Why would the brain think after death? Ceasing of brain function is the definition of death.

And death from "natural causes" is the result of any number of ailments. The label "natural causes" just means there is no reason to think there is foul play or major disease. Technically a heart attack or stroke in an elderly person is natural causes.

An answer from atheist: First of all, ghosts have nothing to do with religion. Plus, sighting is no proof. There is no proof whatsoever about anything like that ever happening. With that being said, there's not proof of anyone going anywhere after losing their life either. All we have is a lifeless body.

(Atheist answer) Honestly, I believe sightings of ghosts are just hallucinations from the people who "saw" them. Because seriously, if these ghosts existed, why aren't we ALL seeing them?

Genesis 2:7 states the following: "Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul."
Also in 1 Corinthians 15:45 it states: "It is even so written: "The first man Adam became a living soul.' The last Adam became a life-giving spirit."
It is noteworthy that in multiple places throughout the Scriptures, it is clearly stated that we do not contain a soul rather are a soul. When we die, it is comforting to know that contrary to popular belief our "souls" do not roam around helplessly. Since we are souls, that "soul" has ceased to exist.
We have brains because our living creator Jehovah God made us in his image. With out a brain simple body functions cannot occur. Also with our brains we have thoughts and are able to process and analyze them. Humankind is Jehovah Gods intelligent creation.
Our brains are incredible when we give them the right use and put them to do Jehovah Gods will which is to learn about him and teach others (John 17:3, Mathew 24:14).

The 'soul' is separate from the rest of us. We need a brain - obviously - to run our bodys. Souls have nothing to do with our physical body. The body is merely a vessel that holds whatever it is that we refere to as the 'soul'.
Ghosts dont exist. Souls do not wander about without people. If a person dies the 'soul' goes into a sort of 'dormant' waiting mode somewhere.

Maybe non of you have actually looked not just with your eyes but with your soul and head (yes I believe we do have a soul and it works hand in hand with our brains) for ghosts. Also I believe that our souls don't actually go to heaven but that it goes to our version of paradise to wait until it is needed again and in essence we(our souls and entities) just keep coming back in a new body

You have interesting beliefs.
Report as
Of course you're free to imagine anything you like; that doesn't make it real.
Report as
That is kind of offensive and one question do you see no logic in this and PLEASE don't tell me that I'm wrong

And who are you to say that it is just my imagination have you died and come back?

I wonder if you mean why do we have a mind? The brain is just a very sophisticated computer that runs the body and passes on or translates information from the soul/mind to the physical aspect of consciousness we are in touch with on a normal daily basis. Atheists formulate their beliefs about life the same way Christians do, through their interpretation of the experiential and learning events in their lives. According to Jesus, an atheist (Samaritan) who has love in his heart is much closer to God than a Christian who has the law and ritual in his. I choose love as the best base for life, regardless of belief.

We'll of course we need a brain to think! And to have our heart beat, and breathe! Or soul is different I believe! It is more of our spirit! Or personality, our very core of who we are! You can't see a soul! Not even with an M.R.I.!

But it has been proven that conciousness comes from our brain, not from some imaginary force people think we have.

Well of course our brain keeps us conscious! I never said it did not! Who are you to call my beliefs imaginary?

there is a difference between knowing a god exists and believing a god exists. you don't know he is real, you only believe that he is real. to know something is real, you need proof, and you have no proof. im sorry, but the only reason you believe in your god is because, you believe in him, thats the only reason. you don't have some amazing reason or shred of evidence to believe in this god of yours.

basically, all that goes through your head is "god exists because he exists, god exists because he exists, god exists because he exists"

and please, don't go on with that "the bible is all the proof you need" bullshit, the bible is not proof, at ALL.

I believe in ghosts because I've had an encounter I was not imagining or seeing things I know what I heard and encountered.

As an atheist, I believe the human sees what they want to see, whether its there or not. My wife died in surgery, she saw nothing, how do we explain that?
