Why do candles flicker?

Powers out so its a question to wonder

Report as

When the flame burns it heats the air which rises drawing additional cooler air in from below and the sides. It is almost impossible that the flame be exactly centered (and in fact, it is desirable for the wick to curve so it burns off and doesn't get too large) or for the air flow to be totally even, so the flame may stand upright for a brief period but the slightest shift will draw more air from one side and shift the flame which changes the air flow some more, and so on.
One reason a lamp or candle with a glass chimney burns more evenly, besides keeping out obvious blasts of air is that the flow of the air up through the chimney is more uniform all sides - smoothly rising from the draw above.
