What is the best medicine to take for a cold?

Stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing, chest congestion... what is the best medicine to take?

All cold medicines only mask symptoms by shutting down various biological responses your body invokes to get rid of the virus. Unfortunately there isn't a medicine you can take to actually "cure" yourself from a cold. Your best bet is to eat well, stay away from anything dairy and get lots of sleep. That said - Sudafed (my favorite, in daytime and nighttime formula) will make you feel a lot better even if it doesn't actually do anything to kill the virus (in fact, it will help it spread since you've shut down some of your body's defences)

Sleep! Seriously! I try & stay away from Sudafed type meds and I've found that VirusStop (found at WholeFoods) works well coupled with lots of Vitamins A, D & C. I love Throat Coat Tea as well to help reduce throat & cough symptoms.

I agree. I've also had a lot of success with shooting Gaia Herbs brand "Echinacea Supreme" a few times a day while pushing fluids. It's a noxious tonic but it seems to force my immune system into gear when necessary

I've found Zicam tablets to be very effective in either completely avoiding cold / make the cold less severe, when taken in the early stages of the cold. Some days I feel like I'm going to catch a cold for sure, and I just pop in one or two of these Zicam candies per day. It has helped me tremendously.. My wife used to catch cold quite often, now she intakes them (not more than 2 a day), and she hasn't caught cold in a while now..

There are some FDA warnings over their nasal spray, stay away from them. The tablets/candies are fine though, haven't experienced any side-effects. The only gripe is that the candy makes your tongue a bit insensitive to taste for a brief while after you completely eat it. So I wouldn't eat this before I went to a restaurant, say.

The best medicine that I use constantly when I have a cold is ginger coffee. Put a 1/2 inch piece of ginger cut into very small pieces into very diluted black coffee (I usually use Nescafe :-) ) and put honey in for sweetness.. Make a huge batch and keep drinking it and take loads of rest.
You'll be alright by the next day morning.
