Is God really real?

Well im catholic and if gotten curious about this subject. So you see ALL RELIGIONS ARE BELIEFS but why are there people saying hes really real if its a belief but if everything else where made microscopic organsims wouldnt I think we were too?

Report as

The reality of any person's acceptance of the reality of a particular god or gods of their particular cultural tradition or choice requires only faith. Proof by evidence comes after the fact as it requires faith to see that requisite evidence. The reality for people who require evidence first is that god or gods probably do not exist. To ask a non-believer to come into the fold of believers and accept anything as real on the basis of faith, is to ask them to check their brains at the door.

Thanks, Shiny. I remember going to a church service with a friend back in the 70s who was a charismatic Christian, and the pastor made the statement, in so many words, that we should check our brains at the door so we can become an empty vessel for receiving the Lord's life-giving Word. Even if I had still been a Christian at that time, I did still believe that God gave us the ability to reason with the assumption that it should be used.

I went to the pound for my last dog. I walked through the aisles of dogs. One of them seemed to me to be the dog-- but it took two weeks of visits for that dog to bond to me. I chose the dog-- and the dog then chose me.
But there were plenty of dogs that didn't go home with me that were as good if not better than the dog I chose.
Why did I choose the dog? I still don't know, but I didn't make a bad choice. The mystery of object choice is still a mystery. But if you haven't heard the call of God, perhaps he is passing you by on the aisle. Or perhaps you are passing Him by...

Don't take the Bible so literally. That would not be my God either.
Report as
Let's use another equivalent.
The question is "What made everything?"
We'll use the equivalent "Who made that lamp?"

Your answer was "My god"
Equivalent could be "My father"

Your proof was "Everything"
Equivalent: "Lamp".

So...you would say "My dad made that lamp" And when someones says "How do I know someone else didn't make that lamp?" You say...
"Because the lamp exists"?

That doesn't seem very reasonable does it?
Report as
...and that's assuming "What made everything?" is a valid question.

It's completely backwards to assume that because we see examples of intelligent creatures making things, that everything must be 'made' and have some kind of design and function.

That is a very good question that I had never thought about, but look at it like this. Many religions have more than one god, but almost every single one has one true God that is higher and better than all of the others. So I guess that looking at other religions might help you. I'm not trying to convince you to change religions, but it my be of some use to study them a bit

that is a good thought! you are tapping into a concept of morality here as well. as we all know, everyone has opinions that are based off of their knowledge base(or at least what they think they know) and their life experiences. some people choose to appropriately act upon their opinions, and others do not. take the example of religion for instance. it is commonly agreed that it is acceptable to have an opinion on religion, however, it is not acceptable to force your opinion on someone else. the appropriate way to handle your opinion is to have the mentality that you believe in the validity of your opinion, however it is inappropriate to have the mentality that your opinion is right and others are wrong for having a differing opinion. this all falls into being able to understand someone elses mentality and being able to respect how they think. unfortunately, there are a lot of people, both educated and not, that fail to be able to do this, and countless examples may be found on this site.

"Prove it" arguments are nearly impossible to win on either side (atheists can't prove non-existence either). It all comes down to faith, as CalTex points out. His is a nuanced response from the atheists point of view.
As a Catholic, the questioner shows a need to revisit some of his classes on doctrine and faith. CCD (Catholic Confraternity of Doctrine, sort of a Sunday School for Catholics) is the primer on faith and usually answers the question asked. The question is quite basic and answers are found in Catholic Catechism: http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm
Report as
Here is why there seems to be no winner in any of these arguments.
Proof to one, is not proof to another.
But...if we put one's "proof" into an equivalent state, we can really see which one should be taken seriously.
So, someone using a quote from scripture to prove a religion that wrote it, is equivalent to: someone using a quote from Harry Potter (the novels) to prove the existence of Harry Potter (the wizard).

If you think both of those are true...then your argument is proof...if not, you should see why your "proof" is invalid.

The Bible clearly indicates that there is a God. This is written evidence from several different authors, from different nations, over a span of thousands of years. There have been eye-witness accounts, and more.

This is actually a respectable position; one subscribes to a body of belief, often as formulated in a written form. All the major religions of the world have written beliefs. The lack of one is why atheism is lagging in adherents.

Consider this. When it comes to the possibility of God's existence, the Bible says that there are people who have seen sufficient evidence, but they have suppressed the truth about God.1 On the other hand, for those who want to know God if he is there, he says, "You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you."2 Before you look at the facts surrounding God's existence, ask yourself, If God does exist, would I want to know him?

Then as I look to nature, I see how "perfect" everything is. Everything has a purpose and fits together perfectly. This is not caused by a "big bang", it is the "hand of a loving God" that created us and the world about us.

XHero - Not all beliefs are fiction. You believe that if you sit in a chair it will hold you, right? It's your belief that if you turn a light switch on, the light will come on, correct?

Here's the thing with God and doubt. If you're serious, you can ask Jesus to come into your heart, and to forgive you, even if you have some doubts, and THEN He will prove to you how real He actually is! But He's not your slave, you have to ask Him or He won't come in. Once you ask, if you really mean it and really want to know Him, He will come in, and slowly but surely He'll reveal Himself to you and love up on you. It's a wonderful thing. People who DON'T believe, think God should prove Himself to them but that's not the way it works, after all, He is GOD! He can make up His OWN rules, right?

Those of us that have taken this step sincerely, are the ones that are saying He's really real - because God's shown us...more and more every day. From the inside.

Although there is no 100% answer to this (although the religious will tend to say 100% there is), there is no evidence to support the existence of a god. We live in a universe of space and time. This universe somehow came into existence. Science cannot explain how, it just starts with the fact that it does exist. Still, one must consider the question: How did matter come into existence? How did time begin? All of these things cannot be answered within the naturalistic worldview of many modern scientists. Also, how did a "big bang" which would have produced a chaotic result somehow brought about a universe with as much order as we see today? According to scientific observation, chaos does not become more orderly without outside intervention. Chaos tends to become more chaotic.
Is there a God? I say, there must be. Without God, you have many unanswerable questions. Without God, you have faith in something unscientific. Science and God are not at odds. They must go hand in hand.

Helpful Fun Thanks for voting Comments (1)

I believe in God because it takes far more faith to believe in the universe as it is coming about by chance than believing an absolute being guided it's formation. Science looks at all the possibilities and chooses the one most likely. Saying "You can't prove God" is not scientific. There is plenty that we can't prove. We all have faith in something.

Well, I've had many encounters with God. However, if you mean "seeing" Him, then no, I can't say that I have. BUT He has spoken to me before, I've felt His presence so strong that I literally fell down where I was standing, I've spoken in the heavenly language, He's spoken through me to tell people things and speak to a church congregation, I've been slain in the Spirit and I've seen Him do things in other people's lives. My sister's eye was healed in a church service, and I have a friend who had a big know in his leg after an ATV accident (I'm not positive that that's the accident he had, but I'm pretty sure,) and he got slain in the Spirit. When he came up, the knot was gone! I wasn't at these services, but my dad and stepmom were. I was at a service where a man received healing in a deaf ear, however. He's done amazing things in my walk with Him!
