Why doesn't the US military use the .30-06?

I know that the British stopped using their .303 British round because it was rimmed which made it difficult for magazine fed weapons but why would the US stop using their .30-06? The 7.62x51mm NATO on average has less muzzle velocity and less energy. If we stopped using the .30-06 just because Britain wanted a universal round I'm going to be mad.

There were a number of reasons but probably the easiest to swallow was the weight reduction, you could simply carry more ammo. The .223 is a great round and inflicts a lot of damage. In full auto you can put rounds down range accurately. the M-14 was difficult to keep on target do to the climb. Alas we have given up great weapons to make NATO happy. I remember when we were hit with the news that the 1911 would be replaced, we actually thought that it was a joke. If it were up to me I would have traded my 60 for a BAR, nobody asked me what can you do

The 9mm was scary, we weren't sure that if overrun & at the end of the line that it wouldn't even kill us. We came up with some ideas about how the Beretta could better the US. We simply deliver bags of them to every city, along with barrels of ammo. We'd have a quick 3 day course on proper breathing, trigger pull, sight picture & of course maintaining the pistol. To many gang members think that they're in the movies & do the arm turn yo yo method. Our research has found that to many rounds are no where near the intended target. We hope to get enough quality shooters to make a difference. To make it more appealing we are offering them in red, blue and gold-for the Latin Kings (they seem to left out a lot, but not now-we believe in America. No bigots here, because we care)

I've always been a slave to the 1911

I was always surprised (and happy) that the government kept weapons that actually worked and worked well. The MA Deuce will have to carry the flame until the SAW gives way to the 60

Overkill, and not nato. Too many different kinds of rounds make things difficult.
