Honesty is always the best policy. Not sure why you asked for a non violent way to go about it though. If you or your fiance has an issue with violence, that alone is a good reason to break off any engagement.
Tell him the truth in a way that there is no blame or arguing - maybe your feelings have changed - maybe you need to be alone - if that doesn't work - use the George Constanza line (Seinfeld): "It's not You! It's Me!"
Make all your arrangements and then tell him (by phone if you are worried about violence) that the two of you don't love each other enough to create a loving relationship and home life. Say that you want to be with your family for awhile and go without seeing him. Accept no communication from him. Be really strong. Send him any gifts he gave you without a return address. Do not blame him. Just be gone.
