Me and my friend had an argument over rapping was a type of singing or not. I believe Rap is a form of Rhythmic singing.

He believes it is just poetry, and rhyming. I would love to hear what you all think about it.

Rap for me is just a poem but with rhythm. But now rap these days doesn't even make sense that it sounded more like blurting out words with rhythm.

So you say it isn't a form of singing?
Report as
It's a form of singing. You use your voice and that's what makes it singing.

Most, not all, most rap songs don't have a rhyme in them...at least to my thought processing. There's good music in every genre, so it's tolerable to me.

But do you believe that Rap is a form of singing?

Rap songs should never exist in the first place, they are the incestuous children of actual good music that was drunk at a bar one night and didn't recognize the other person, rapping isn't art and most of it has no meaning, sometimes the rhymes don't even make sense. I believe that people should look to the 1960s and 1970s for inspiration on how to write good songs. Sorry if you disagree, that is just my opinion.

80s and 90s (especially 80s) had great music too.
Report as
Yeah, but I think pink floyd and the beatles more or less paved the way.
Report as
Sorry, the Beatles are in a different league than Pink Floyd. The Beatles, Stones, and Who paved the way.
Report as
Nice agreement but this was saying if you think rapping is a type of singing or not. Not wether it is good or bad.
Report as
I answered it properly, rap is not singing, it is nonsense.

It may be singing, but in my eyes (I should say ears), rap will never be music. 95% of rap is about money, s*x, drugs, and "swag". Real music has more than an electronic beat and a guy singing/talking so quickly you cannot comprehend a word.

Swag means a decoration for a wall :P

Swag is for people who got nothing to do in life but just think about money, s3x, and fame.

@love_doc Agreed!

No problem.

Music doesn't have to be some deep existential commentary on life. Art is whatever you make of it. I don't know why people get all religious and think art has to have some deeper meaning than to entertain and waste people's time.

@pass

Rap is not art. True art endures throughout time. Something for future generations to have from the past. Led Zeppelin is art. Will people be listening to Lil Wayne or Snoop Dog in 40 or 50 years? Nope. Also, I'm an atheist, so I wasn't getting "all religious".
Report as
Religious in terms of how to view music and art. Art is subjective and only has meaning to the person who creates it and the people who interpret it. And how do you know what people will be listening to in 40 or 50 years. I'm sure when Led Zeppelin came out in late 60s, parents were saying the same thing about Led Zeppelin that you are about rap. And Rapper's Delight came out in 1979 and people still listen to it. It only has a couple more years to go before you consider it true art.
Report as
Music is art in itself, and who knows? When I'm 60-70 I will sure as hell listen to some Lil Wayne or some Eminem. We can't just say that we KNOW it will It will die out.

I personally don't like Rap, but I have listened to some rap songs that surprised me and caught me tapping my foot. They focus on giving a message, but what good song doesn't? (Most of them give a bad message, but there ARE good ones out there.) Even though I'm not really a fan, I consider Rap to be a type of singing, but only if the rapper knows what he is doing. I have a friend who loves rap, and the way he sings it sounds like he's trying to argue. That type of rapping I don't consider singing!

Rap is awesome music and it's totally singing. Have your friend look up the definition of singing and rap would be included. People who don't like rap are like the same people who didn't like rock and roll when Elvis and the Beatles started to become popular.

Thanks for the input. I like the example you gave to.

Comparing rap to the Beatles and Elvis? Stfu.
Report as
He isn't making an Comparison he was giving an example.
Report as
Yeah, I know. I'm sorry because rap totally blows the Beatles and Elvis out of the water as an art form. What do a bunch of rich British stoners know about politics and pain and suffering of the lower class. And Elvis just stole his music from black people.

It seems like mostly talking with a beat to me

He brought this up, but when you talk you don't have any form of expression usually. Like the pitches they talk in going from an aggressively form of saying words then giving it a sort of tone to it. Like a Rock or Country sing would just at a slower pace. This sound like a valid argument?

I guess music is in the ear of the hearer :)

Well yes but music falls under everything. Like musicians play music and singers are Musicians as well, but they play with there vocals. So do you think rapping would be a form of singing?
Report as
No, sorry

I think it's based on opinion. I think yes it's technically singing. For me, singing could be anything even if you don't raise or bring down your voice.

I agree, but it was killing me on what other people believed.

lol its because they look at it like its talking, but it can be singing

Rapping is poetry to a beat, not singing. Singing requires your voice to achieve different musical notes, not just talk to a beat.

You don't think a rapper can go from really soft to really loud? Witch are different musical notes and Pitches.
Report as
And didn't say they couldn't, they can they just don't, and until they do, I stand by my answer. Ohh and changing the volume of your voice is not the same as changing the pitch of the notes. I'm not saying their not talented or artists, they are, their just not singers.
Report as
A high or a low note can easily change the volume of your voice, Like you can have loud high note and loud low ones, witch is a different pitch. Like a song that I think you might know. No Love by Eminem and Lil Wayne I believe, he is rapping at the very begging, just slowly and with different rhythms, but to not have a pitch would be dull. For any singer can agree with that.
