Sometimes when you think your chickens won't lay the darned things can surprise you.
When Sir Edmund Hillary became the first man to climb Mount Everest his guide. Tensing Norgay, wanted to reward him in a special way so he went out onto the mountain and found a wild rooster that had just laid an egg. Hillary was amazed and said, "Roosters can't lay eggs," but Noray just smiled and said, "Himalayan rooster."
Male chickens (also known as roosters) do not lay eggs. Only female chickens (also known as hens) can lay eggs. Not all hens will lay eggs. If they are lacking nutrients or are stressed they will not produce.
If the chicken is a rooster it will never lay an egg. A hens egg laying is seasonal, depending on the hours of daylight they get. So, they lay less or may stop laying in the winter months depending on the breed. And, by the way, a rooster has nothing to do with whether a hen lays eggs, he only makes the eggs that are being laid fertile, to develop into chicks. The eggs in grocery stores are not fertile.
