I want to be a Police Officer, but my parents want me to be a teacher. What do I do?

This is driving me insane! Why can't they just accept that I don't want to follow exactly the same career path as my mother? Is it really not enough that I'm a straight A student, took all 3 Sciences and French for A-Levels, gave up Drama, and had them constantly tell me every day that my friends aren't of the same 'social standing' as me?

Try and talk to your parents and let them see that your passion is in becoming a police officer. Be respectful and considerate when talking to them. Have a relative whom you trust talk to your parents on your behalf if they will still not listen to you.

Don't worry about it ... once you turn 18, get a job, move out of their house, pay your own way, and take responsibility for your own life ... you can go into whatever career you want.

Tell them what YOU want to be. YOU should get to choose YOUR career path, not them. Tell them, "I want to be a police officer. Why don't you live your own life, and let me live mine." This will work. And also explain exactly why you want to be a police officer.

just tell them that you dont agree, if you want to be a police officer take the chance dont let your parents get in the way of the things you want to do/love the most. if they dont listen then try to compramise with them. like if the police officer dosnt work out, then tell them you'll try to be a teacher.( but yoou dont really have to try and be a teacher)

Ok..your parents are just being..parents. They are concerned for your welfare, as any parents would feel, however, you have shown them you are bright and can handle responsibilities.
Tell them nicely that you know what you want from life and if they love you [guilt trip] they will respect your wishes. Maybe you might change your major in college, who knows, and that can be a comfort to them, They do need to know you will soon be in college, and you have to live your life, as they are living theirs. No strings attached.

I understand where you're coming from. It's nice to have parent approval, and acceptance for your chooses, however, it's ultimately it's your life, and your decision, not theirs. You do what makes you happy, and pursue being a police officer, if that's what you wish to do. I agree with Walt and kuuipo!

Hi Shaylen and Kookiegirl!
.
Shaylen, I'm so psyched. Haha. I found out how to play the entire track for the lead guitar in Fall Out Boy's 'The Takeover the Break's Over', by myself. In doing so I improved my guitar skills a lot. I'M AMAZING! :D:D:D
Report as
And humble too. ;) Lol, Jk. That's awesome, Marcus! Wait, so the entire album? That's pretty cool! :) I've been working on my drawing skills today, and I can't get it perfect, so taking a break, lol. I suuuu... Lol Jk. I'm too much of a perfectionist. Anyway that's cool. :)
Report as
Oh no. By "track" I mean something in musical terms. Let's just say I found out how to play the lead guitar throughout the entire song 'The Takeover the [henablehbleh]'. :)
.
What are you drawing?
Report as
I think I got confused because I wasn't sure if that was a song, or album name. But ohh ok I get it now. (Mostly!)
.
Just a picture I found on my Instagram. It's this girl-and she's really pretty, so I had to draw her, lol.
Report as
Ohhh and btw-a lady from the independent living serves stopped by, and I signed some paper work for it. She's going to help me find a room mate, teach me life skills, and try to find an apartment for me. I was worried my mom wasn't going to help me for a while there. I so hope I can be moved about before next semester! But that put me in a hopeful/happy mood this morning!

Oh well happy birthday!! Now you can be like pssssh, those teenagers. ;P I turned 21 on April! And ahh, yes, love the warm weather. love being outdoors-I'm the beaching/camping type! It has been insanely windy here for a long time and I dislike it! Otherwise it's been hot, warm and cool. (Bipolar- ness!) That's nice though! :)

Omg! That sounds like mine! She tried to use flattery as well. "You're so good at writing, you have a gift. You should write books." That sounds like a great way to get poor, mom... Plus, yea, just no. I always wanted to work intricately with animals. Still not sure what I want to do, but that's defiantly NOT it. Lol.

And it was great-I was there for like five minutes, lol. We didn't have a final, we just had a final project, and I turned that in, and an essay, and an extra credit assignment. I'm gonna miss that class though, and the teacher, he is awesome!

I honestly don't think it matters. Parents should be supportive in their children's endeavors. It would not make sense to pursue a career, and have a career, that makes you miserable, because it would make your parents happy. Too many people hate their careers, and I personally don't like cranky teachers!
Report as
Great advice!!
Report as
And shaylen...I wish I could star your comment...it's awesome!
Report as
Thanks truckerlady! :)
Report as
You said it Shaylen, no matter what my girls decided to do, I stood behind them. Parents should always support their children's dreams, we had our chance, it's their time to shine and be happy.
Neither one of my girls wanted to work in the medical field, they couldn't get past the blood, lol
Report as
True to that parents shouldn't pick their kid's career, but the questioner didn't say their parents WANT him/her to be a teacher. All they specified is that they don't want him/her to be a police officer, which is completely understandable.
Report as
@kookie-that's awesome. :) If I ever have kids, I plan on supporting whatever they want to do, I wish my parents did the same for me! Every idea I have ever had in terms of a career, they've ridiculed or objected. And lol-I can't even hear the word blood without feeling limp! Or needles! I go limp at the sight of them >.< lol.
Report as
@marcus-it actually does say that in the question. I don't see what's wrong with being a cop, my dad's a cop... But if that's what she wants to do, her parents should back her up.
Report as
It says "Why can't they just accept that I don't want to follow exactly the same career path as my mother?" That could be a presumption of the asker, or something that's not to be taken literally. Nothing there that says their parents want them to be a teacher.
Report as
"I want to be a police officer, but my parents want me to be a teacher. What do I do?" It's in bold.
Report as
Oh I see. Okay, you're right.
