What do you do if someone is constantly telling you that you are not good enough and should just quit at something?

I run track and am pretty good, but I haven't qualified for states. My parents think I should just quit because I'm an embarrassment for not making states yet. What should I do or tell them?

DON'T QUIT!!! I would keep practicing so i could get better. I had to do that when i first started playing sports. It is hard at first, but in the end it is Totally worth it!! i say keep working on it so you can get better (:

If it weren't my parents (and if I lost my temper, even if it was) I would ask them what great achievement of theirs gave them the right to judge.

Your parents sound over-bearing. Tell them you like to run but if it makes them happy you could always just play video games the rest of your life, grow fat, have health-related issues, give up social interaction and leach off of them the rest of their natural lives.

Not the best way to make a point (and you might get grounded, or whatever parents do these days) but it would make a point.

If being impressive to your parents is really that important to you, then you should try and be more physically active whip yourself into even better shape, live, breathe, and dream exercise. Before every workout drink a protein shake, and then again after. On the other hand if this I'd something that really bothers you talk to them about it, no matter what your parents have unconditional love for you, they just want to see you be the best you can be. Sometimes negative reinforcement is the best motivator perhaps that's what they're trying to do. ultimately do what you want to do not what they want you to do.

I know what I would tell them .. but that would be inappropriate language for this forum.

You can pick a flower, you can pick what you want to wear, you can pick a colour, you can even pick your nose ... but you can't pick your parents. As in this case .. that's just too bad.

I can't understand why your parents would EVER say something so insensitive and downright mean to someone they supposedly love. That is just plain uncalled for.

Swimmer91, I agree with bikergirl.also, you said you were pretty good.it seems that you must like it to have gotten pretty good. if it's not only about competitive spirit, then stay with it. I mean, winning is great and all that. but it's not everything. but only keep with it if you want to. maybe, just a casual reply, like: I really like it,I guess I'm not that into winning for appearances. hopefully your parents will back off a little. the idea of saying that my child is an embarassment, it's really kind of shocking. I don't want to say unkind things about your parents..... but,WOW, that's all I can say. you sound like good kid, with a good head on your shoulders. just keep growing as you are sweetie, everything else will fall into place naturally. I hope all goes well for you.

your parents were wrong to make such a statement, but please forgive them, they are only human and I'm sure they did not mean to hurt your feelings. I would tell them that you want to continue simply because you like it
