As you said, they're 'personal'.
And as far as I know, you can say your name on here,
But it's not advisable ALL of it.
You never know who is behind the screen.

It poses a risk to personal safety, which is the biggest factor involved. Someone who gets ahold of your e-mail address, for example, could also get their hands on a lot of other information about you, and that is dangerous.

Ask is also not designed to be a social site, so sharing of personal information or arranging to meet with someone are not suited for Ask's Community.

Hi pointy. I wanted to ask you something. Why are there so many trolls on here lately?
Report as
so can we still share personal info?

BeamerTron2 - No, you cannot.

Captain - I couldn't tell you :/

But just why?

@Beamer - Ask is primarily a search engine, so anything that you post here is literally visible by almost anyone anywhere around the world. You wouldn't give your personal information to a virtual stranger, which is what you would be doing if you posted it here in the Community.

According to Wikipedia ask.com gave up the search engine business in 2010 because it could no longer compete with google and bing. Ask.com moved into the social media business at that time, so why are the mods all saying otherwise?!?!
Report as
My understanding is that they no longer have a separate search platform, but they do still primarily act as a search engine. If you go to the Ask.com "Answers" tab, you can do keyword searches, just like you can with any other search engine.

I completely understand and agree with not sharing personal information on the Internet. The ask.com search engine/social network thing is really confusing (%

To avoid a situation in which no answers were available from its own resources, the company outsourced to Google the comprehensive web search matches that it used to gather itself.[37][38]
.
This is what I have from wiki in response to your last post.

I guess I understand that ask has a lease on google so it can still function as a search engine.. sort of?

This is what it says in the Help Center...

"Is Ask.com a search engine?

Ask.com lets you search the web like a search engine does, but we’re different from your average search site in that we aim to deliver answers, not just links. Half of the queries we get are in the form of a natural language question, so it’s our goal to return a straightforward answer. Search technology, like algorithms and our own proprietary Q&A index, uniquely allow Ask to do this.

I read Ask.com doesn’t do search anymore?

We still indeed provide search, however we now outsource broad web search functionality that we then build on top of to create the unique Ask.com experience."

The people in charge of Ask probably don't want a bunch of people becoming victims of stalking or identity theft on their website. Besides, this isn't really a social media site, it's a site for answering questions.

It's not safe to share personal info online where the rest of the world can see it. It's dangerous.
Also, this is a site for asking and answering questions. This site isn't meant to be a social site.
