What American pick up or SUV, from about 1998-2007, has the best gas mileage and is affordable for a first car?

I'm hopefully getting my first car in two years, and I want an American truck or SUV. Ford, Chevy, GMC, Jeep, and maybe Dodge. I don't like cars, they're too small for me. I need to know what's affordable and what kind of gas mileage I'd be looking at.

I don't know why, but I can picture you in a Jeep Cherokee. Crappy gas mileage, but hey, it'll get you where you want to go with safety and rugged charm...8)

Unless you're hauling something big on a regular basis, I honestly think you'd be better off with a car
Unless you plan on taking it in the mud

None of them have decent gas mileage. I would highly suggest you not get something like that for a first car. A first car should actually be a junker so that you can learn to drive in it and get the feel of your reflexes and all that. After you get comfortable... Then you get something decent. It is always a shame to see a new driver wreck a decent vehicle.

Thanks, but don't worry. I'm not a careless teenager.

It isnt about being careless... it is about being inexperienced..... and if you havent been driving regularly... You are inexperienced.

I think Isuzu Rodeo's got the highest marks in some of those like dependability and resale value but I would go with a jeep!

SUV and gas mileage don't go together. U get either one. I drove SUVs for decade and finally had it with gas prices turned in and got Acura hybrid. Best thing ever happened to my pocket.

It doesnt have the best gas mileage but I would say jeep, and all that buy a Junker for your first car is a bunch of hooey in my book.I say get something safe and nothing under 2008, just because you will have a more modern and safer car with less problems, find one with the lowest mileage you can, shop around for that and price, dont buy Junkers or anything with a salvaged title.

But the problem is, can I afford something as new as a 2008??
Report as
In two years they will be 7yrs old, im pretty sure as long as you are you are saving you could get something even newer in 2015, of course imsure you already know this but im goining to say it anyway, make sure its a safe car, make sure it has and air bag, abs brakes and power steering, make sure if you buy it from a private citizen or even a used car lot that you take it to a mechanic to have the engune, transmisson, radiator air conditioner, brakes, tires and elctrical checked out to make sure its safe and wont be breaking down on you the next day.

Thanks Gussie. That's what my dad and big bro are for. XD

I had an '01 explorer 4.0L v6 that got 25 mpg. As long as you don't need to tow anything, it got decent milage and went ANYWHERE. trust me. I had it mired past the hubs in snow (more than once) and it pulled itself right out. Now I drive a '99 cherokee sport. It should get about the same mileage, but it isn't stock, so it gets about 22 mpg. Dependable, tough, goes anywhere, and its just plain mean.

Huh... 25 mpg for an Explorer? Wow... I'll definitely check it out. Thanks!

I also think if it from 1998, It would be jeep or ford that rule the market
but from 2005-now seem lot of asia and euro brand are increase and it best select in term of gas usage.
