Would you consider rap music? (old school)

I love rapping, but some people think it's just a bunch of cuss words and a beat. What do you think?

Report as

Honestly, I hate it and it gives me a headache.

It's music to me, but a lot of people don't like rap because it is new and different. Or they just don't like it. Or the rap they listened to sucks. Meh, haters gonna hate!

I think it's music. Not all rap music is full of cussing. That's just what the popular artists today paint it as being.

Disagree. It's rhythmic story telling. In African culture, a popular way to relate a tale was to gather in small groups and explain your story to others using visceral wording to hold interest. Influenced by other musical genres, it developed it's own musical algorithm. It's the evolution of a cultural and musical relation. Given, it's been twisted over time, but it's roots remain the same.

Some people are idiots :) Rap to me is like poetry when done right. Some of the stuff out there is foolish and just a beat with cuss words but true rap is someone with talent to put certain words together and create figures of speech such as metaphors and similes. Rappers such as Tyga and French Montana is more beats/cussing (dont get me wrong i still love thier music) but some rappers with actual talent you can listen to are Immortal Technique, Joe Budden, Wu-tang clan, Tupac, Westside connection, Cam'ron , Jadakiss and the whole Dipset group. Also youtube"freestyles" those who are good have amazing talent to just come up with the stuff they do off the top of their heads! If your good don't quit, its a talent.

It has a beat, so yeah. Not my type of music though. Old school rap has more meaning than rap now. I really don't like rap either way though. Unless its from Linkin Park:3

That's what mainstream rap is. Cuss words laid over a beat. There's different kinds of rap though. Different kinds of rap artists.. I should say. All u have to do is find the certain artists U like and go with it. If u like the mainstream. Then whatever. But their are some rappers out there like D.O. From Bride Dressed In Black.. Lecrae, Tedashii.... They have deep lyrics. Word with true meaning. They're not just spitting about some jerk they new back in high school or some girl they _____ up last night. They're rapping about encouragement and the truth. That's what real rap is. That's what I've learned to be true rap and idc what anybody says. Mainstream rap to me is worthless to listen to. It injects your head with the party life (drinking, drugs, sex) and everything else on the list. Find a rapper who is encouraging.. A dude who speaks the truth. And I think you'll see what the difference is.

Listen to What? by A Tribe Called Quest. Don't just hear it, listen to it. Hear the message. There are also a lot of other artists like Tupac, the Wu-Tang Clan and Eminem that all pour their hearts and souls into this art. It's not just sound, it's meaning conveyed by rhythmic poems.

No, "rap music" is an oxymoron. "Music" means musicians playing musical instruments.

if done by the right person its considered to be somewhere in between regular talking and singing. Having the ability to memorize all those words and say them at the speed they're going is talent. that's not to say everyone who can talk fast is a rapper but you have to have singing ability too.

" ' old' school"? rap isn't old enough to have an old school! it isn't jazz,it isn't even rock and roll! in terms of the life of music rap is still a baby .

It's a blunder. Today rap has nothing to do with original rap, original hiphop. It is needed to make some distinction between them, however, calling them "old school" and "new scholl" doesn't express the real difference. I don't think you know De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Salt 'N' Pepa or Pharcyde, otherwise you wouldn't speak so. Well, the truth is that today rap isn't rap at all. From this point of view, you're right, adding that rap -- though I love it -- is a dead baby.

I'm really happy you replied,I reread my post,I came across (again) like a bitch. I was only commenting on the relative age of the genre. in reality,I know nothing about any current artists,or much about past artists. I've read a lot of comments tonight that kind of have me thinking that I ought to check this out. I may be missing a lot of good art, musically. so yeah, again, sorry about how I came across. and thanks for getting me thinking.

It's good to meet somebody who know nothing about current artists, I too try to know nothing about them. So everything's okay. Just listen to old-school rap!

I don't like any of it except ICP, Twiztid, Boondox, Blaze Ya Dead Homie and Eminem ONLY! All the rest is nothing but annoying noises and talentless song writing and pointless lyrics, basically it's all crap to me. I like music and songs that have meaning to them. Heck I've written two rap rock songs like ICP and hed p.e.

I don’t understand that though your question is about old-school rap, several people writing above mention Eminem as one of the greatest rappers, as one of the few ones who do this genre really well. I don’t think they know anything about real rap. The truth is that Eminem was one of the greatest blow to rap music. He become popular, just like Jay-Z and others by doing fake rap. As I’ve said (my answer to Janiepa106), it has nothing to do with original hiphop. It is shere pop music… of the worst kind. See: De La said on their "album in 1993: "It might blow up, but it won't go pop." And it didn't go pop. But you can never hear it in the radio. I hope you too thought something similar when mentioning old-school. If not, then my answer: De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Naughty By Nature, Black Sheep, Salt ’N’ Pepa, Fugees, Pharcyde, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. That is real rap – and of course, real music.

Well, I didn't mention the essance of the matter. There is rapping, this special kind of chanting, rhyming and there is rap music, two absolutely different things. Rapping was originally a feature of rap music but it wasn't the thing which made it rap music. There is rap music even without saying a single word. (For e.g. I'll Be Blowin' by De La Soul) But some people took the technique of rapping and adopted it to another kind of music. But it is not rap, it is like taking a chessman from a chess set, keeping throwing it, and saying "that is chess! Why? Is it not a chessman?" I hope you understand. Without the music it originally belongs to, it's generally just a noise. If you talk about "old school," you must be talk about original rap, which is evidently real music.

The music samples rappers rap to is music. However, Rap itself is urban poetry - NOT music, and that's putting it euphemistically.
