I want to buy a silver chain, but how to know if it's real silver without asking the guy?

All silver will have a mark. If it is a necklace, bracelet or anklet there will be a small medallion or on the crimp on the opposite end that clasp is on. It will have a mark sterling silver is always marked by the number 925. (on rings it will be inside the band)

The real silver will have a dull shade; it won't look shining or glossy in most cases. These are the features what I feel would be there for real silver. Check out, some videos or images of real silver before you get it.

Just adding to the other quality answers posted. Take a small magnate with you. If it is metal plated with silver the magnate will stick to it!
