When sodium hydroxide is mixed with water the reaction is exothermic. This makes the reaction Na+ (aq) + OH- (aq) ? NaOH (s), which makes the water warm. Get detailed information about this reaction on http://www.northstarchemical.com/prod_sodiumhydroxide_prof.htm.
