How Could Jesus Be Both God And Man At The Same Time?

Report as

Th name for it is hypostatic union. This is the union of the two natures (Divine and human) in the person of Jesus. Jesus is God in flesh (John 1:1,14; 10:30-33; 20:28; Phil. 2:5-8; Heb. 1:8). He is fully God and fully man (Col. 2:9); thus, he has two natures: God and man. He is not half God and half man. He is 100% God and 100% man. He never lost his divinity. He continued to exist as God when he became a man and added human nature to Himself (Phil. 2:5-11). Therefore, there is a "union in one person of a full human nature and a full divine nature." Right now in heaven there is a man, Jesus, who is our Mediator between us and God the Father (1 Tim. 2:5).

Hi General! I'm glad you like to hang out with Christians too! Hebrews 3:13 says that we should "exhort one another daily, while it is called today, (or while we are alive) lest any one of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin." That says believers should hang out with other believers, so that the drama that is the world of sin won't bring us down! I'll look forward to seeing you around Ask, bye!

He was born of Mary (human), and was conceived by the Holy Spirit (God). He is God's son and was born as a human, so that he was both.

I agree with thetrustylepp. Besides, Jesus said He existed before Mary, and before king David. Tho, everything you said about Jesus was correct, just missing a few details: Jesus was God before becoming a human. He was the Word of God. A part of God that is self conscious, like the Holy Spirit. That s why Jesus said He resurects who He wants. He was saying He also has a choice that God has given Him. Like if I give my secretary the money to do what she thinks is best. Only, its a different relationship with Jesus because they are so close that they are one.

So, Jesus being a part of God that is a person, like the Holy Spirit, Went in Mary by the Holy Spirit, but taking a human form, He left His godly nature, and took a human nature. But who He was didnt stop being God. Its like Iron Man. Iron Man doesnt stop being Iron Man when he takes off the suit. Jesus didnt stop being God when He left His Godly nature.

Because Christians want to claim to be monotheistic, they won't use the correct term: Demigod.

1 parent god + 1 parent mortal = demigod: a mythological being who is half human and half god

If he was "fully god" ... and god is "all powerful" ... Jesus shouldn't have required a mortal to give him birth, in order to gain "human nature".

Helpful (3) Fun Thanks for voting Comments (6)
Report as
We are monotheistic. God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit are all one in the same. Jesus was not a demigod. He was God. In human form. He had two mortal parents, and did require that in order to be human. He was exactly as we are. He was angry, He cried, He was hungry, He was thirsty, He was tired. Except for one major difference. Christ did not sin.

Lilly ... "Demi" does not mean 2. You may want to look up a word, before you claim what meaning it has.

Demi: a combining form appearing in loanwords from French meaning “half” ( demilune ), “lesser” ( demitasse ), or sometimes used with a pejorative sense ( demimonde ); on this model, also prefixed to words of English origin ( demigod ).

Yeah it's a weird concept. In Christianity, Jesus is kind of God incarnate. He was the aspect of God that walked the earth, and then he rejoined God in Heaven. So they're one and the same - Jesus was just a piece of God.

I usually refrain from answering questions about God or religion because I frequently get a lot of flack for stating my beliefs.Your comment is a case in point. I went to the link you gave. It wasn't one that I could just click on. I had to copy it down then type it all in. It was a long article and when it got to a certain point it said click here to read more. When I clicked it just went blank. In the future if you have a point to make please just state it simply and plainly.
In the part of the article I was able to read I saw a couple of problems. One was that when the Devil showed Jesus Christ all the power and the kingdoms of the world and said he would give it to Jesus if Jesus would fall down and worship the Devil, in the Biblical account the Devil said that it was delivered unto him and that he could give it to whoever he wanted. Luke 4:6. If that belonged to God, Jesus would have said "No it isn't you liar. It belongs to my father". That power was delivered to the Devil by Adam. God gave it to Adam and Adam gave it to the Devil. It was the Devils to give if he had chosen to do so. If Jesus had made that deal, he wouldn't have been able to fill his role as The Messiah.
Another one which seems to be the crux of the Trinitarians argument is that God used the first person plural instead of the first person singular in referring to himself. This is taken to mean that he was talking to Jesus Christ while he was creating everything and is offered as proof that the one God is some type of plural being. This stems from a lack of knowledge about figures of speech. The first person plural is sometimes used to show the magnitude of the one speaking. It's not common anymore but it was used in 17th century England when the King James Version of the Bible was first published. I'm sure it's a rhetorical device anyway. I really don't believe that he ( a spirit ) was verbally talking to himself or his other self while he was creating everything.
By the way: I am not a Jehovah's Witness as many people assume when I say that I'm not a Trinitarian.
I have my beliefs and others have theirs. I'm not prosthelytizing but if I see what appears to be an honest question I may answer it. If others see that my beliefs are unusual and feel the need to change my mind, I may or may not respond.
Personally, I think it's odd to claim to be monotheistic yet worship a "Triune" God. I believe that there is one true God and to place other Gods before him is idolatry. There is one God and one mediator between Man and God, the man Jesus Christ. Not the Godman or the Demigod, nor as some profess the Mother of God. Other people can believe as they wish. This is what I believe.

Im not offended when others share their beliefs. None of us should be. Yes, I see you are on your phone, from a phone you can not automactically click the link. Please, if you have a home computer or can get to one, you will see the difference (you can click directly on the link). Thanks so much for sharing your beliefs, I love to reason on the scriptures, but never argue (Acts 17:2). Like you, I also believe that there is only one God. I do not believe in the Trinity either. The term is not even in the Bible. Yes, I too believe as the scriptures show that there is one mediator between mankind & God, Jesus Christ ( 1 Timothy 2:5). I adhere to the Bible as authority because it is God's inspired Word (2 Timothy 3:16). I like to "ask" and discuss with any who is willing but never debate. "ASK" with you later!

Thanks for your response. Yes I'm on an iPhone and I don't have Internet or cable TV at home and I live in an area where there is no over air reception for TV so I don't have TV. No big loss on the lack of TV but I do wish I had Internet. That's why I got an iPhone.
Anyway, I wasn't sure where you were going with John 17:17 and I'm still not totally sure where that article was going. It seemed to be debunking Jehovah's Witness beliefs but the website was called Horse & Home (two things I hope to own someday) so I'm still not clear what their purpose is. Maybe they're just not set up for mobile phones. I'll go to the library and check them out this weekend.
Yes, I really try to avoid arguing about the Word of God. It's not only pointless but counterproductive. I can just imagine the Devil gleefully rubbing his red hands together laughing evilly (speaking figuratively of course) while Gods children argue and go at each others throats. He can't rob us of the power that God has made available through the sacrifice of his only Begotten Son so he tries (quite successfully) to confuse us and convince us that it isn't so. I'm looking forward to the return of Jesus Christ so that we can leave this stuff behind. Even if I had everything this World has to offer I would be happy to leave it behind.
Report as
Sorry for late reply. Ok, yes I totally understand. I hope you got the opportunity to view it at the library. That is so true!!! I agree & feel the same way! The Devil loves chaos, and rightfully so, the Word identifies him as the one that is misleading the entire earth, or as some translations read, deceiveth the whole world (Revelation 12:9). Yes indeed JDBoDean, I too am excited about the successful, wonderful, happy future that is promised for obedient mankind that is in God's Word :-) (Psalms 37:9-11 & Revelation 21:4)

Muslims believe that Jesus peace be upon him according to the Holy Quran is a wonderful, humble, generous messenger of God who came down and revealed God's words to his people, the people of Israel. Muslims do not believe that Jesus is God, nor they believe that God ever chose to come down to earth in a form of a man to die for our sins to purify us and forgive us.

According to Islam, Jesus never died on the cross, nor ever wanted to die on the cross, nor ever was born to die on the cross. Muslims believe that Jesus was sentenced to death, and people thought that he got executed on the cross. The Holy Quran rejects this idea, and claims that it is a false one.
Let us look at what the Holy Quran (The Muslims Holy Scripture) says about this issue:
1. "That they rejected Faith; That they uttered against Mary A grave false charge; That they said (in boast): 'We killed Christ Jesus The son of Mary, The Messenger of Allah.' But they killed him not, Nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjunction to follow, for of a surety they killed him not. Nay, Allah raised him up Unto Himself; and Allah Is Exalted in Power, Wise. And there is none of the people of the book (Jews and Christians) But must believe in him (Jesus) Before his death; And on the Day of Judgment He (Jesus) will be a witness Against them."
2. "The similitude of Jesus Before Allah is as that of Adam; He (Allah) created him (Jesus) from dust, Then said to him: Be. And he was." After a description of the high position which Jesus occupies as a prophet, we have a reputation of the dogma that he was Allah, or the son of Allah, or anything more than a man. If it is said that he was born without a human father, Adam was also so born. Indeed Adam was born without either a human father or mother. As far as our physical bodies are concerned, they are mere dust. In Allah's sight Jesus was a dust just as Adam was or humanity is. The greatness of Jesus arose from the Divine command "Be", for after that he was. He also was a great spiritual leader.
3. "O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: nor say Of Allah ought but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) A Messenger of Allah, And His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and the Spirit proceeding From Him: so believe In Allah and His Messengers. Say not "Trinity": desist: It will be better for you: For Allah is One God: Glory to Him: (Far Exalted is He) above Having a son. To Him (Allah) Belong all things in the heavens And on earth. And enough Is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

Shiny, Christians may have faith in it, but they don't understand it either. Those who say they do just delude themselves, they don't really understand it. Report as
Wait, did you just admit you don't understand it? Confirmation is enough for me.
As to projecting that others don't either, it's not strictly so; I think I understand the doctrine pretty well. I have explained it several times, and well enough to pass my master's exam. If you wish to learn, I will attach a link.
I also answered similar questions recently (this last week) and gave the word given-- tupos-- the same word we get type from, and I illustrate it by saying that imagine God as a spirit being a typewriter key. He strikes the ribbon and leaves an exact impression on the page, an "express representation" of his invisible nature. This is what happens when God entered man-- he leaves his express representation of his nature on flesh in the person of Jesus.
This leaves Jesus with two natures or two aspects: human and divine, or in the former analogy, paper and print.
I give an second analogy of a steel rod in the center of a wooden staff to describe these two natures. If you beat the staff on a brick wall, the wood may suffer, but the metal will not yield. This means He suffered all temptation, yet without sin. See here: http://www.theopedia.com/Two_natures_of_Jesus

The scripture has an unusual way to describe it: "and He Himself is the express image of the invisible God..." Col 1:15. The "imago Dei" is in some way a representation of God in flesh. The word used in one context is typos, from which we get the word typewriter. In a very real way, God (the typeface) struck a ribbon, and left on the page of the real world an express image of God, like a typeface. Jesus is God in flesh, what God is as a man. "He who has seen me, has seen the Father."
Cf Phil 2:6ff.

Jesus is God in the flesh. It's really simple to understand if you realize when we leave our bodies behind and our soul( which is spiritual ) goes to God is a divine place that our simple minds just can't comprehend Jesus God and the Holy Spirit are one. The logic isn't there because its impossible for us , but not for God.

actually ... That doesn't show anything except your ignorance ...

Have you read the ( Tafsir & Asbab Al nuzul ) for the verse ? surely not
---
let us see what the verse say :

( 12 ) [Remember] when your Lord inspired to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip." Quran (8:12)
---
The historical context is that this verse was revealed at the Battle of Badr, a battle in which the pagans of Makkah traveled over 200 miles to destroy the Muslims of Madinah. The Pagans of Makkah had an army of about 1000 while the Muslims were only 300 followers. The Prophet Muhammad ((peace be upon him)) and his followers had suffered severe persecutions and torture for 13 years in the city of Makkah. Having fled from Makkah to the safety of Madinah, they found that they were once again threatened. Abul 'Ala Maududi describes the situation that led to the Battle of Badr, beginning with the Muslim activity in Madinah:

The Makkans were not satisfied with expelling the Muslims from Makkah and subsequently desired that they be purged from the surroundings of all major trade routes. So God supported the Muslims and informed them that God would allow justice to prevail over oppression. He informed them that they should not fear fighting in God's path, but it is the enemies who should fear God's retribution for their oppression and injustice. Also, God inspired the ANGELS to support the believers and strike the disbelievers. This was NOT a command for the Muslims.
Report as
Shaykh Safiur Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri describes the situation during the Battle of Badr as follows:

" [The Makkans] were too much exasperated and enraged and fell upon the Muslims to exterminate them once and for all. The Muslims, however, after supplicating their Lord, calling upon Him for assistance, were made to hold to their position and conduct a defensive war plan that was successful enough to inflict heavy losses on the attackers. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) used to pray to his Lord ceaselessly persistently and day and night to come to their succour. When the fierce engagement grew too hot he again began to supplicate his Lord saying: "O Allah! Should this group (of Muslims) be defeated today, You will no longer be worshipped."... Immediate was the response from Allah, Who sent down angels from the heavens for the help and assistance of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and his companions. The Noble Quran observes:

And recall when your Lord inspired the angels: "Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved." [8:12]

what you had wrote doesn't show that ...
Report as
I have a copy of the Koran on my kindle, and on my desk, you really should not underestimate what I do in my free time. What I wrote, absolutely shows true knowledge of your religion. But how can one who has never seen that true knowledge, truly understand that? Your note on the hadiths about taking several, well, that's fine, there are several that talk about hunting down and killing people who are hiding behind trees. As I said, just invest some time looking into it, and honestly determine whether what you have been taught is the truth. I will leave you with that my friend, and I hope that you come to true understanding. Goodnight.

hehehehe .. That is really funny ... now , you claim that you understand the Quran more than me ... ? Lol , i am a native Arabic speaker ..
we study the Quran from the first Grade ... but we study it in full context with true understanding ...

aha .. " hunting down and killing people who are hiding behind trees "
Then you are pointing to that Hadith ...

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."
===
do you understand the difference between an order and a news ?
between a command and an information ?

this Hadith .. tell us that in the last days a fight between Muslims and Jews will occur ... you know , in the History ... many wars had occurred ... so , nothing strange in that ... and have you heard about Armageddon ... wars will happen at the end of time ... that is a prophecy which is to be fulfilled ...

I should have known that trying to show truth to someone who is indoctrinated was useless. Oh well, I suppose it's too bad really.

aha ... would you like to take a challenge ?

provide all the proofs you have that Christianity is the true religion and Islam is not .. and i will provide mines ... ha .. do you agree .. ?

Very well,
half of the Koran is a plagiarized monophysite prayer book (Histoical fact),

Christianity existed hundreds of years before Islam (Historical fact)
and has thousands of documented miracles even today (Reality fact).
Last I checked, Islam truly has none to speak of aside from conquering most of the known world at one point in history. The Bible and it's related documents have also been around far longer than anything in the Koran or hadiths. When it comes down to it, if you look at the history of it, Islam it not truthful about it's origins, at least Christianity is. I will not say that Christianity, as you term it, is absolutely correct. there are many Christian religions that are absolutely false, but Islam is just as false as those. There is also the fact that the hadiths and Koran are very self contradictory to each-other, almost to the point that it seems as if Allah is bi-polar and can't decide whether to be a warmonger or peacemaker. There is also the fact that Islam is set up as a political system, that happens to have a religious aspect. The very word Islam means "Submit to Allah", and the religion itself denies the existence free will <(A philosophical reality that no true religion would deny). Whether I am certain that Christianity in general is the truth or not, I can say for certain that Islam is not.

It's simple philosophy really

The scriptures does not explain Jesus as being God almighty. He is God's son. He is creation not "the Creator". Jesus said that the father is greater than he is (John 14:28; 1 Corinthians 11:3). Jehovah is the God of the bible and Jesus is his firstborn son (Psalms 83:18; Colossians 1:15). Jehovah has always existed whereas Jesus was created (Psalms 90:2). Jehovah sent his son down to the earth for many reasons, one to die for our sins. Jesus was a perfect human who fully obeyed God while on earth. He set the perfect example for us to follow. When Jesus was on earth he prayed to his father for help and guidance. This proves that they are two different people. When Jesus died he was in the grave for three days. Who brought him back to life? His father-Jehovah.

Jesus and Jehovah are two different spirit beings. Jesus was sent to earth by his father to redeemed mankind from sin and death, giving us the opportunity for everlasting life (John 3:16). Please read the above scriptures they are very clear. The bible is God's word of truth and it never uses the word trinity in it. In fact, the concept of the trinity stems from false religion.

Muslims also believe that Jesus did not suffer and die and rise again. That someone else did it so that he would not have to suffer!
That CANNOT BE TRUE:
Only Jesus was the perfect sacrifice!
To concor death And Sin..... Jesus had to die to fulfill scriptures from
Genesis-psalm-isahia!
Those prophecies were fulfilled!

If you dont believe that..(..to the muslims) then you are believing a
False prophet - called Muhammed!

Listen...we Muslims love Jesus Christ and respect more than you do...we never said Jesus was a false prophet we believed that he was God's messenger, BUT people (Christians) didn't follow his rules( the true ones) so God sent the last prophet...Prophet Muhammad was sent to all mankind, Jesus was sent to Jews who they tried to kill him but no they couldn't...
You shouldn't insult our beliefs...Jesus is mentioned in Holy Quran many times in a way that all the bibles combined can't describe...the prophecy of prophet Muhammad is mentioned in your bible and he is mentioned BY NAME in the Jewish bible...

What good is it to love and respect Jesus if you do not believe in His
Resurrection.... And that He IS GODS SON. Read 1John 5:10+: 10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
Hope this helps!

John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The Word= Jesus Christ

Luke 8:1-37 records Jesus casting demons out of a man living in tombs. After healing the man Luke states,

"The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 'Return home and tell how much God has done for you.' So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him." Luke 8:38-39

Revelation 1: 7-8
Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be! Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."

John 13:13
"You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am."

Romans 14:9
"For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living."

So, These Bible Verses tell that Jesus is God....... There're even more......

Well, I'm not a Christian. I'm a Muslim. And according to Islam and the Qur'an, God has no children, partners, etc. He is alone in His Greatness.
We Muslims must believe in the other holy books as well, like the Torah, Bible, etc...and we do. But we believe that all the holy books EXCEPT the Qur'an have been changed. The ones you read today are not the original and accurate ones. But that's a whole other topic that usually starts a debate and I don't want to get into that.

If Jesus was God as some believe then why did he sacrificed himself? For our sins right? Okay while he was on the cross..he was looking after the universe? And when he went to the skies why he didn't punish those who killed him? it doesn't make sense at all...

The first answer from Strawberrygirl is the best.
GOD made His dwelling among us, while remaining on the Throne Of Heaven. GOD fills time and space, and exists every place at the same time. While remaining in Heaven, His own Essence, In A Person, Who we call "Jesus" came to dwell among us, live a Perfect life, die for our sins, and rise again.

See this verse 1Cor11:3?But I want YOU to know that the head of every man is the Christ; in turn the head of a woman is the man; in turn the head of the Christ is God. ( NWT ) If Jesus is God in this verse then the woman is also a Man.

Indeed: Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5, Mark 10:8, Ephesians 5:31. One mind, one spirit.

Aside of that, Jesus was the word of God (John 1). His voice. How can someone not be one with His voice?

He left His Godly nature in Heaven and only kept the communion of God when He came into existence as a human being. Then He received the Holy Spirit of God when He was baptized, which lead Him to the desert to prepare Him for the task at hand. After He was crucified, His body was glorified and then He returned to Heaven and retook His Godly nature.

People who are not perfect and who didnt think of ressurection gave their lives for others. How much more God, who could ressurect and had made a perfect sacrifice. Or do you think Jesus did not have the power to save Himself? He did, and He told Peter He did when Peter cutted the soldier s ear.

he died and was buried and on the third day he ROSE again ! He sacrificed his life for us. He still lives.
Report as
Not only did He sacrificed His life, but He prepared His life for the sacrifice. In all the days of Jesus s life, He never sinned, even tho He was in the same condition we are, and He was tested in everything. Only being perfect without sin He could make the perfect sacrifice that could redeem us. It wasnt just the betrayal, the whips, the hits, the cane, the crown of spikes, the dehidration, the physical deterioration, the weigh of the cross, the shame, the people hating on Him for nothing, the nails, the crucifixion, the fire of Hell... it was also the perfect life. And yes. He ressurected the third day. And He ascended to Heaven and sent us the Holy Spirit.

This an excellent question that should demand an answer. The book of John is a great source for such a topic. John 3:16 says, "For God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life." To be a son or a daughter would make us inferior to that of our parents. Well, if Jesus was the son of God, wouldn't that make him inferior to God, not about or equal?
Jesus had no desire to be God, rather he submissively sought to do his Father's will, not that of his own. (John 7:27-29)
Jesus was the beginning of all creation and a witness of Jehovah God. (Rev. 3:14)
He was created by Jehovah before the earth came to be. (John 8:23; Col. 1:15-17)
Jehovah God had no beginning. (Rev. 22:13)

The trinity is God the father God the son and God the holy spirit
He is three in one and yes it is hard to wrap our minds around it
But just think about it like this. Ice it is three in one
#1. The solid,ice
#2. The liquid, water
#3.The vapor ,steam
All three are still ice just in different forms like the trinity. I hope
this helps you understand it better.

It's a silly concept, honestly, and one on which the early Christians were highly divided.
The two prevailing camps were that Jesus was just the son of the Abrahamic god, not god himself, and that Jesus was god. This was basically an argument about the Greek words for "same substance" and for "like substance"- these words actually differ only by the letter "iota", which is where we get the phrase "an iota of difference".

At the Council of Nicaea the issue was voted on by committee (which should tell you something)- and they tried to make the best of a bad job. On one hand, if they claimed Jesus was just the son of god they were breaking the first commandment by worshiping multiple gods. On the other hand they had the problem of the atonement- if Jesus IS god, how is his death a sacrifice at all? You are left with god sacrificing himself to himself to get around his own rule, which is nonsensical.

The Council went with the Jesus IS god plan since polytheism was considered a worse offense, and invented the complex, frankly ludicrous Trinity concept to get around the atonement issue. It should say something when even theologians admit "it's a mystery" and that it must be "believed on faith".
