What des the effect "trample" do in the card game Magic: the gathering?

You get no defensive damage, if I remember correctly. I used to have a grass-light deck, so I had a lot of those.

I have a Shadow/Fire deck. My favorite cards are Demon of Death's Gate and Balefire Dragon. Both are Mythic Rare.

it allows piercing damage. So if a 5/5 with trample attacks you and you block with a 0/3 you are going to take 2 damage

You may divide the damage.

EX: My Balefire Dragon, a 6/6 red creature, is my only creature on my side of the battlefield. My opponent has a Pride Guardian (0/3) and an Elite Vanguard (1/1) . If I use my Dragon to kill the Pride Guardian, I can use the other 2 damage (which would have gone to waste otherwise) to kill the Elite Vanguard, and still have 1 damage to spare!
