What's the first step to learning a new instrument?

I really want to learn how to play violin, but I don't know where to start. My school doesn't have a strings band or anything. Help!

Hi Katie! I'm a violinist and have played since I was 10 years old. The first thing you need to do is find an instrument. If you go into a shop, generally they will know how to help size you for an instrument, because they have several different sizes. If they don't know then you need to shop elsewhere. The things you'll need are:

Violin and Bow
A case for them (get a hard case, not a bag)
Rosin
A microfiber cleaning cloth
A metronome (pronounced metro - nome [like "home"])

You will also want to get some new strings for the violin and ask them to put them on for you.
I would suggest you find a private lesson teacher to start learning. Especially since you won't know how to tune your own instrument. Lessons run around $20-30 a week for beginners.

When I first started learning I used the Essential Elements book, the red one. Read it one page at a time and follow the directions. Master each little exercise before going to the next one. The metronome helps you keep a good rhythm.

violin is a beautiful instrument, second only to the piano in my opinion. Stick with what you really want and you'll do fine. There is always a place for violinist in the world of music. Instead of "band" think "orchestra".

Find a good private teacher, if there are none at your school.

Do your homework..Look and ask about teachers in your area. Most music stores offer lessons in various instruments Check the newspapers for Music Lessons, Ask your music teacher in school if he/she knows of any good teachers who give private lessons etc. The violin is a wonderful instrument..

There is a music book that I learned from and you can practically teach yourself. I did have a teacher though. The book is by Mueller Rusch.

All you need is will. Many great artists never had a teacher or a band to play with, you can self-teach yourself most things and playing an instrument is no exception, though having a teacher would speed things up. You could also look online for free lessons.
Step one is getting a violin and simply start playing. You will be terrible at first but it feels very rewarding to slowly become better and better - and you will! Practice really does make perfect.
