What year(s) are 3 digits phone numbers from in the United States?

In 1877 when the phone system was just starting, names were used. Then depending on the size of the phone exchange, there were 2, 3, or 4 digit phone numbers until they started assigning two letter codes to some of those exchanges starting in 1928. Of course there are still just a few 3 digit numbers such as 911 and 411 that are still in use today. You can find more information at:

my dad had a service station in western north carolina. in 1946 and he had a 3 digit phone number
