How did we come to be a country to celebrate Halloween?

Who started the holiday of Halloween? At what time did we start to celebrate Halloween?

We became a country that celebrates Halloween when the Irish immigrant came to America as they were fleeing from the potato famine. Halloween was their custom and they used to celebrate it. See more information at http://wilstar.com/holidays/hallown.htm.

There was just a documentary on about that very thing. The Catholic church, very powerful at that time, had to have converts, but the people who emigrated here didn't particularly care for that. So the church took what they called pagan holidays(the solar equinox,All Hallow's Eve, etc) & changed the way they were celebrated and the names to make them more "palatable" to the "christian" way of worship. That's why we have Halloween instead of All Hallow's Eve.
