Really really good question. The answer is, we don't know. We will never know. It's one of the magical, wonderful mysteries of our world. You must have a curious mind to ask that question. Good for you.
No it doesn't end. If you traveled past all the planets and came to a wall, what would be on the other side of the wall. Why do we have to have a purpose? Why must there me reasons for everything. This is the curse of the intelligent. It is naive to think that the is any kind of big plan for all this.
Space can be seen to be expanding, and it's rate of expansion is even accelerating, which prompts the study of dark energy. Space has expanded from a singularity; evidence of expansion from a singularity can be seen as the cosmic microwave background radiation. But who, if anyone, created it is something there will probably never be evidence for or against. Because there can't be evidence for or against something that doesn't exist.
