Many years ago my mother had a homely little Manx cat named Samantha... she was a marvelous hunter, and would bring all her prey home for Mom to say oooh and aaah...no mouse could survive for blocks around our house!
I was there one day when Mom opened the door to Samantha's knock to find a dead rat almost as large as little Samantha (who never got very big). After the first gasp of horror, Mom collected herself and poured on the admiration and praise.
So Samantha came in for a nap, then went outdoors, collected the rat from where we had thrown it, and repeated the whole performance! (And Mom went along with it...more celebration of Samantha the Great Hunter...)
This cat really likes you and has decided that it wants to impress you with it's hunting skills and prowess. Pretty much the same way it would a potential mate. Don't know what you did, but you really got this cats attention.
Better to have a dead bird then a dead rat. Just think of the beautiful gift that comes next. Kitty will climb up into your lap and smear his/her face all over your face and stuff. Definitely their unique way to say I love you.
