I've got yellow and black caterpillars trying to get on my boat also, the ones I have are western tent caterpillars (Malacosoma californicum pluviale Dyar)
They turn into moths.
If you see cocoons in the bushes or trees nearby and you live anywhere in the western half of the u.s. these are probably the ones you have, but there are many varieties of yellow and black caterpillars. Try your search again with the correct spelling.

Not Monarch. Possibly Eastern Tent Catterpillars, same family as the one
Kokinaw mentioned. Try his suggestion and do another search but type in
"Tent Catterpillar", make sure you spell it right.:-).

The caterpillar is known as the yellow stripped armyworm. Its scientific name is Spodoptera ornithogalli. The caterpillar can also be found in vegetables. More information can be found at http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/veg/leaf/yellowstriped_armyworm.htm.
