I found out an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure certainly applies when it comes to getting a lost passport returned. Okoban tracker tags are equal to way more than a pound of cure in my book. They allow anyone who finds your stuff, like a passport, to contact you by email or text (without revealing your personal information) with a pickup location. When I lost my passport in Mexico it was returned to me the next day because of one of these tags. I got my tags at Mystufflostandfound.com
The very first thing to do is to go to a police precinct to report the lost. It's a must, you don't want anyone to commit a crime or something and leave your passport on the crime scene. After that apply for a new one.
first look one more time. You never know it may be in a spot you least expect. Second if you still can't find it report it missing by calling The National Passport Center 1-877-487-2778. Then go to the post office to fill out the paper work and be patient. It can take up to 6 weeks. You can also use an expedited service like http://www.rushmypassport.com as they can provide passport services as quickly as within 24 hours.
