How can you tell which direction is North, South, East, west without looking at a compass?

Without a compass

Report as

There was a study done with Alzheimer's patients that, when left alone, the majority of patients always walked north. So, if your lost, just look for an old age home and see which way all of the patients are walking.

During the day - by the position of the sun. At night - the north star (northern hemisphere) or southern cross (southern hemisphere).

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Using this, you can extrapolate to find north.

Sun always rises in an Easterly direction, always sets in the West (not exactly, it depends on what time of year and your location) Also, you can use landmarks such as the ocean or a mountain range.

the sun rises in the east so if its early on in the day the sun will still be east and it sets in the west so if its later on in the day the sun will be west

As others have said by the sun or stars. Also if you are in the woods where the trees block the sun and stars, you can tell by the moss on the trees and rocks. The moss will thicker on the northern side.

Well, the sun always rises in the east. That helps a lot. It's harder to tell if the sun is directly above you, noon. Another way is to look at moss. It grows toward the north.

the sun rises in the east and it sets in the west if you've seen a compass before then you should know how to find north and south

With the help of a shadow cast from a tree, and a handwatch (must not be digital) you need one with the hands. You place them in such a way to the shadow , that one shows north pretty accurately.
