Unmarked police cars in New York

I feel very uneasy about this, my boyfriend and I were pulled over for speeding by an unmarked car with a plain clothed cop. He said he was with the sheriffs department. We were going a little fast but not nearly as fast as he stated and he let us off with a warning. Which I feel would not be appropriate if we were doing 145 mph like he said. I've read that an unmarked cop can not pull someone over for minor traffic violations in New York and want to know if anyone knows more than I do. I live in a very rural town in upstate New York and have never seen that before.

Did he show a Badge and ID. If it happens again, don't pull over until you are at a public place, like a Truck Stop. You got lucky, if it had been you alone in the car, you could have been kidnapped or worse.

We were close enough to my boyfriend's place we pulled in there. I let him take care of it and stayed away, so I did not have much of a chance to see a badge or ID.

That sounds weird because they are suppose to take you to jail if your over 100 mph .

The unmarked police cars restricted by the New York state law from making traffic stops for routine motor vehicle. They may only stop the cars that are suspected of penal law violations. You can contact the New York police headquarters for more on the unmarked police cars.
