German Shepherds are very smart, It is how you train them. They are wonderful dogs, They are great with kids. remember it is a baby, babies need alot of patience. you need to puppy proof your home. If you treat this animal well, some day it will save your life. Take an obedince class to teach you how to train them. Remember, If it chews something up, its your fault, cause puppies need to chew, they are teething, they need to go potty every 2 hours cause their blatters are not unlike a little kid. good luck and god bless. please be kind to the puppy.
If you are raising it from a puppy, then it will probably be ok, just make sure that you get proper training for it. They can be very loyal dogs, and loving dogs, but I've known a few that were pretty vicious as well.
Wonderful dogs! Smarter than most of the people on here. ( they know when they're pregnant ) there's a reason why they use them for police, fire, seeing eye dogs, and guard dogs. I have a friend that worked narcotics for many years whose shepherd took a bullet for him. His picture is hanging up in his living room with his little badge mounted to a plaque underneath. I do recommend to spend the money having him professionally trained to maximize his full potential. Good luck. You'll be fine.
i think that they are very loving dogs. i have an neighbor who has one. her name is aspire and she was trained to be a gard do. she barks at any one that pools into the drive even if she knows you and she may bight you if you pose a threat to her or her master but if she knows you are not going to hurt her or her master she is so loving and sweet and from what i know they love to play fetch. GREAT CHOSE OF DOG!!! god bless an i hope every thing turns out well.
They are good with kids. ( most of the time). If you have it trained, either by a trainer or get some good books, you will most likely have no issues. Common problems like mouthing and knocking the kids down are issues that having a dog trained will correct. I've currently got 2 GSD, have owned around 10 and have 3 kids, the youngest is 1 1/2. We have never had a problem with any of our dogs. Most stories you will here will be caused by lack of training and socialization, or a poorly bred one with a skewed Temperment. Good luck with your new pup!
Train them well and it should be fine. Make sure the kids know how to handle the dog and are gentle and it should work out fine. Also make sure the kids understand that not every big dog is as nice as theirs. Growing up with large dogs makes children unafraid of large dogs.

My 6 year old white shepherd had his first real experience with a 3 year old and after watching those 2 play and chase each other for 2 1/2 hours i would trust my dog implicitly to be around children alone. He was so gentle with her. She could pull his tail and take his toys out of his mouth with impunity. Toys that i have a hard time getting him to let go of, she was able to get from him no problem. It just amazed me that he could play with her and know not to be rough.
No, not like most people think . They're actually the most common breed that turns on children. Not the pittbull like the media. My GSD and my aunt's and uncle's GSD hates kids. Most people i know that were bit by GSDs if any dog.
