Humanity was initially vegetarian (Gen. 1:29), but after the Flood mankind was allowed to eat meat, given some restrictions (few on Gentiles, many on Jews) - Gen. 9:2-4. It is therefore allowed to kill an animal for food. Not allowed for any other reason (except for saving a man's life, I suppose). Some have suggested that in the future humanity will go back to its initial vegetarian state, but at this time it is allowed to eat meat. Others have suggested the meat eating regulations if the Bible do not mean that God wants us to eat meat, but only that since we do anyway, it's preferred to regulate our bad habits.
