I don't know how big you want them. Mastiffs, bullies, and boxers are my favorite large breeds. Mastiffs are the easiest to socialize, I believe. The only downside is the drool, and they kinda look like an old man's chin.

Labrador Retrievers are excellent dogs. They are extremely friendly, loving, loyal, really all the things that make a great dog. They are beautiful animals wether they are "yellow," "chocolate," or black.
any of the retriever's, Akita, wolf hound, all known from personal experience. St.Bernard's are also good but there size can actually pose a danger to small children. all of these breeds have the defining characteristic of being very patient. children crawling on, pulling on, and hitting don't really bother them. that said go to your local animal shelter and look around. ask to take a couple back to the meeting room and play with them. give em a few hard tugs around the mechanical and face, if they react to strongly try another. if you get one that doesent react at all and just keeps gently seeking attention, that's a winner. don't believe the breed hype the best dog I've ever seen with kind was 1/2 Rottweiler, 1/4pitbull, and 1/4 German shepherd.
