when should you get your new car's oil changed?

Report as

"They" suggest 3 months, and / or 3,000 miles.( At oil change establishments) but I hear you can wait longer.

Thanks !! I went a few weeks ago. It's high pressure sales!! They made a "list" of what I "should" get. I was "ok, next time". They put a filter in, etc,and my $30 oil change turned into $90. I (nicely ) asked that they remove it for now. He had to get my perfectly good one back out of the garbage, but he whispered he was sorry. After I left , the oil light was on, so I went back, and 4 guys are taking a turn at turning it off. Hilarious. They talk fast ,and if you are female.......

From what I know, most cars' need an oil change after 3000 miles of driving. However, the intervals between oil changes will depend on your driving habits and the type of car that you are driving. You should check your owner's manual to know the period after which you need to do and oil change.

A brand new car I'd change after 1000 miles cause of metal shavings.

I pretty much agree with Clemence. Even though owner's manuals say something like 7,000 miles between oil changes, I think this is way too long to go. But I think you might go a little longer than 3,000 miles, perhaps 4,000 or 5,000 at the most. Twenty or thirty years ago, 3,000 miles was the standard oil change interval. But oil and rings have gotten better now, so I think you'rer safe with 4,000 or 5,000 but no more.

If you are in a city driving condition, do it every 3000 miles. If you are on a highway driving condition, 5000 miles is ok. Consult your local car dealer service department.

Every 3 months or every 3000 miles, whichever comes first.

If a new car chances are it has an oil life indicator. Read the manual. My Honda dealer recommends oil life at 30 percent to change as opposed to waiting for a prompt.
