If a domain name is already taken in the .com form, would you use .net or .biz instead?

I feel like .biz or .net would be annoying to use and not as memorable as .com for a company domain website. Do you think if the business is branded well with the .net or .biz, it matters to the end user?

Even though it seems like these days it's hard to find good domain names that aren't already taken, I'd keep poking around until I found a .com domain. It's just so culturally embedded that people automatically assume .com. It's almost a reflex.

It's also just good to prevent brand confusion?if the .com is taken that means there's someone else out there with a more primary URL for whatever you're trying to promote. You don't want people thinking they're you. I've also been in meetings where someone's presenting a website and I couldn't find it by typing it in to the URL bar on my laptop...until a second glance I noticed it was a .net domain.

That being said: if you do find a .com you like, consider buying the .net .biz .etc etc, to protect your brand!

Good luck on your search!

Hello,

There is no technical reason to not use a non-.COM Top Level Domain ("TLD"). As you inferred, the reason to not use a non-.COM TLD has more to do with non-technical reasons, such as marketing and brand.

In addition to your alternative suggestions, you might consider choosing from the full list of valid TLD, which is located here, ("http://data.iana.org/TLD/tlds-alpha-by-domain.txt").

I think what you're getting at is whether your site would be memorable. I would opt for another site name, if possible, because .com will probably stand out (and you don't want your customers going to .com thinking its yours when you have .biz or .net).

You can go ahead and promote the .biz name, but I would recommend getting a name with .com and .net available as well and having it auto-forwarded (your registrar can help you with that). People will automatically think of .com, and most web browsers automatically add the .com when a user fails to enter it.

Bottom line: Go for the .biz name, but also at least buy the .com.

It depends on what king of business it is, if it is educational use .edu, if it is a organization use .org, This helps people to remember the web address if it is related.
