If a plant cell is given only sunlight and water, it can't make sugars through photosynthesis, why?

Report as

It also needs carbon dioxide. A plant cannot get the carbon it needs to produce sugar except by taking in carbon dioxide.

The reason why a plant will not be able to make sugars through photosynthesis even when supplied with water and sunlight is because of the lack of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the source of the carbon in the glucose made through photosynthesis. The 6 carbons of glucose come from 6 molecules of carbon dioxide.
