I'm a Christian and my older brother has no religion, but used to be Christian. How do I convince him that Christianity is real?

I talked to him about it already and he said he doesn't believe in the "supernatural". he doesn't believe in God, heaven, or hell. he said he wants proof.

Report as

Dear wittier, all you have to do is start praying for him. Release him into Gods hands and let God carry this heartache for you so that you may have peace. Pray like this, Dear heavenly father may you reveal your self to my brother spirit and soul, through your mercy and grace and may you grant Him the faith to believe in You with all his heart and soul. May you comfort Him and bless Him to feel the wonder of your love in Jesus Christ Emanuel's holy name I pray, Amen and Amen... As for proof, ask Him to google the Testament of Solomon and read it all. All so He needs to start researching near death experiences. If He won't you should do it for Him and write it down for Him and show him or just talk to Him about it.

Your very welcome!

But ultimately God's proof to the world is love. Jesus's love is revealed to the world through His people. So love your Brother unconditionally no matter what! And little by little Jesus will soften His beautiful little heart and He will be drawn back to the source of all love.
Report as
In Jesus Emanuel's mighty and holy name Amen!

He went to a college called Furman university and changed there, it was probably in one of his religion classes he took.
Report as
Oh I see, religious spirits attached to Him Wittier. So then You will also need to pray to God and ask God to remove any Spirits from Him that are attacking His faith.
Report as
They are the ones blinding Him and making His eyes blind and His heart numb. Don't worry though God will help Him Witt.
Report as
Just give Him to God and pray.
Every one who reads this please pray for Witt and especially Witt's Brother. So that He may come back to Gods love and be set free to believe again please.

Good night Witt.

let him decide
dont push him towards something he doesnt want or you will just push him even further away
ask him why he doesnt believe
have a conversation about it. tell him to be open minded but if he doesnt want to be a christian thats fine but you would just love for him to try it out

You can't just "try out" believing in something you think makes no sense. That is like telling you to try out being a Hindu or an atheist. Think you can "try" believing in Shiva for a while?

Does the poster, to be fair, have to "try out" being an atheist too?

Why so angry skep He used to be a Christian so technically He's only being reconverted... All joking aside, you realize you spend all your free time trying to un convert the world. I could say your just as guilty as she...
Report as
I have never and would never try to deconvert anyone. I don't care what people believe if they keep it to themselves.

The problem is- as evidenced by this question- Christians can't seem to do that. They feel the need to disrespect everyone by pushing their beliefs onto others unsolicited. Of course it makes me angry- the fact that you folks are so rude and arrogant as to presume to badger people into your religion is unethical and shows a fundamental lack of respect for anyone else.

And I hate to tell you but most American atheists used to be Christian- and we left for a reason. It's hard to "reconvert" folks who have seen once how nonsensical religion is.

As a christian it is MY responsibility to preach the word of God. I'm not being disrespectful to him by giving him reasons to believe in Christianity so he can go to heaven and not hell

Report as
There wasn't much opinion emitting from you or 'wisdom'. Sounded to me much more like a disgraceful smear campaign but two believers claiming to know the individual reasons for someone else's beliefs, or lack off. Did that really seem acceptable to either of you?? Really??
Report as
As Christians we are suppose to tell others the word of God, that is why we human beings were created
Report as
You seem poorly informed. Forgive me for not jumping into a philosophical debate with you over mans purpose or origins, but it will lead nowhere. So let's just keep on track instead. The reason believers spark anger in nonbelievers, is because of the very sort of comments you two have left here. You cram this crap down our throats with a smile, and all we ask is that you keep it to yourselves; What do you not understand? I'm certain your brother is sick and tired of the same old rhetoric too. Consider that, before wasting his time trying to reconvert him. You're overstepping the bounds of respect.
Report as
I have not been forcing it on him, I have just found out that he was not a Christian three days ago and only talked to him about it once
Report as
You have already highly overstepped the bounds of respect by all of your comments
Report as
Listen closely, bringing it up again is likely to annoy him. He's very capable of making his own decisions concerning faith, religion, and god. Your only responsibility as a sibling is to respect his personal feelings. Is he trying to make you NOT believe? I bet not.
Report as
I am well aware that he is capable of making his own decisions, but bringing it up again it is my responsibility as a Christian to offer him the chance of eternal life. He told me he needed proof so I researched it. I am also aware that you should just rely on faith and not proof, but there is plenty of proof
Report as
No, there's zero. But if you feel you've aquired some, I'm sure he'd welcome it. Care to share what it is?
Report as
Lol, commenting on these questions is a waste of time if those comments will just be removed. There was nothing wrong with my first comment here. Ridiculous.
Report as
One is that in the Bible it says that when the world is coming to an end, meaning God coming down from heaven to take everyone to either heaven or hell, the world will be filled with evil. Look At the news, there is much more crime and natural disasters then before, the world is becoming darker and darker with evil.
Report as
Whitt, the bible can't serve as evidence of existence because it was written by man. No nonbeliever will give you even a second thought if that's what your evidence relies on. The world is just as 'evil' as it's ever been. The difference is more people, and more technology. So it only seems more apparent than ever before. Plus media saturation of negative occurrences. Also; Not evidence. People have been screaming 'end times!' since time began.
Report as
On the bright side, there is also more good being done than ever. Maybe you could add that to your evidence?
Report as
I respect your opinion. Two can you explain how humans were created?
Report as
No, I can't. Because we are a product of evolution, not creation.
Report as
So you believe in evolution, I can easily prove that wrong. If I asked an evolutionist why we cannot see things evolve they would say because it takes hundreds of years. Well someplace, sometime, someone would have to see some animal in the middle of evolving. It's not like they go into hibernation for hundreds of years.
Report as
There is no such thing as an 'evolutionist'. That was a term created strictly to weigh against the term 'creationist'. No, that doesn't prove anything wrong, it actually doesn't even make sense. You can't catch something in the middle of evolving, because whatever creature you're observing is at it's most evolved state at the time of it's study. You're reaching. Are you truly just testing the waters here, to see how your brother will react? If he's done any of his.own research, his reactions will be much the same?
Report as
And oh, it takes MUCH longer than hundreds of years.
Report as
Do you believe in the big bang?
Report as
I doubt my brother would be this rude
Report as
I'm sorry you feel that way. But if you insist on ministering to people who have heard it a thousand times over, and do so with arrogance, you can expect much the same from anyone who doesn't agree with you. The Big Bang? I'll skip explanations, and you can just explain why it's wrong, if that's where you're headed.
Report as
I don't know why you hate me so much, what did I do to you?
Report as
I don't hate you. Not wanting to have the very same debate I already have a thousand times, does not mean I hate anyone. But how many times do you think nonbelievers want to be pestered to believe in things we don't? You and 'wisdom' were straight up insulting Skeptikitten. What gave you two the right to theorize about her personal life? I guarantee you, that sort of thing is one of the reasons your brother doesn't believe.
Report as
I'm sorry if I offended skep and you. I didn't mean to anger you. I just wanted to do my job as a Christian and tell you.
Report as
I have told both of you, so my job is done. You make your own decision, but choose wisely!
Report as
You can't tell somebody about christianity by talking about them like they aren't right there. No apology needed. Don't be sorry, be thoughtful next time. Have a good night.
Report as
Thank you, goodnight!
Report as
Honestly, this whole conversation is a gigantic load of bull.

(1) atheists are not atheists because we are angry or amused or confused. We are atheists because there is zero evidence your god or any other exists.

(2) evolution and the Big Bang are scientific facts. Get over it and join this century already, people. As a biologist I can assure you evolution has more hard evidence than gravity- we have in fact witnessed it in action and your misunderstanding of science does not negate its veracity.

(3) to claim that pushing your religion on others unsolicited is your job and not vastly rude is just proof of the denial of many theists and their use of the Special Pleading fallacy. If any other religious group did what you do, you'd be screaming bloody murder about it.

(4) I have not been hurt. I am not in pain. I have learned the truth, and that truth is that all religion, all gods, are mythology. The invention of primitive men who were trying to find an explanation for things in their world they did not understand. Don't give me the line about people ruining religion- those of us who have spent years of study on the topic know better.
Report as
With the kind of saturation that was at work here, it's more than just special pleading, it's ad nauseum.
Report as
I'm sorry you feel that way skep, I will pray for you
Report as
You folks need to realize how insulting it is to people when you say that- it's condescending and rude. I don't need nor want your "prayers".
Report as
You atheists are doing the same thing by constantly asking for proof and for making us feel like there is something wrong with us for having faith. It's like we have personally done something to you to make you hate us. Maybe you should take your own advice and keep your beliefs to yourself. That's what you keep telling us to do. As for the question, you can't make someone change their mind about what they believe. Just be respectful to him and to your faith as well. It is true that the more you bring it up the more annoyed he will be.
Report as
No one would be required to ask for proof if people didn't try to convince them of something spectacular (like God, heaven, hell, eternal life...). To accept anything you're told, no matter how unlikely it sounds, without requesting proof would clearly be disastrous. You can't say 'you should believe in my God', then get offended when the reply is that you shouldn't or a request for evidence to support what you're saying.
Report as
We only ask for proof when you folks keep insisting we believe in your god and shoving your religion into our laws, schools, and government.

If you kept your beliefs to yourselves no one would care what you believed.
Report as
@Goblin: If you are being made to "feel like there is something wrong with us for having faith", then the problem is not with atheists. It is with your depth of faith.

@Whittier & Wisdom: Although I have not taken part in this thread heretofore, I have taken part in many similar threads. This accusation that atheists are ex-Christians because something in their lives went horribly wrong is a pervasive theme -- and just a pervasively incorrect. My life has been an embarrassment of riches when I was a very devout theist for about 55 years and now that I have acknowledged for about the past 9 years that I am an atheist.

It is not pain that turns people from faith. It is rational thinking. Like most other atheists I know, the more I lived and experienced life, the more it made sense for me that I had always been an atheist and had only been trying to live up to the cultural and familial expectations of theism.

Colossians 3:14 says love is a "perfect bond of union." There are some instances where our actions speak louder than our words. Sometimes your brother might have to see the identifying actions of a Christian in order for him to want to be a part of it. For example, if he constantly sees you showing love to those around you, being forgiving, and being patient and kind with him and with others, he might wonder what is causing that. And he used to be a Christian, so it shouldn't be anything new to him. But don't force him. He'll realize it in his own time.

Hope I helped :)

The Bible says that it is the work of the Holy Spirit to open the hearts of those who would believe. That means that unless the Holy Spirit has opened your brother's heart, no argument, no brilliant commentary, or pleading will make him believe. In these cases we are to pray to the Father....Father, I pray that by your Holy Spirit, my brother would come to know the Truth about you and your Son Jesus, and that he will seek the Spiritual knowledge and understanding of You until the day that you send Him to call us home to be with you, I pray this in the name of Jesus, and in the power that raised Him from the dead, amen! Now, when you finish the prayer, imagine that you are placing your brother in God's hand, and by doing so you can "forget" about it, and leave it alone. Be assured that God wants him to come back, and is the One who can make it happen, God Bless you for caring about the things God cares about too, bye!

Sadly he has heard the Truth, knows it and had chosen to reject it. You cant make him accept. Nagging him could only make it worse. The best thing you can do is to pray fir him every day for the rest of your life. Only God can convince him of the Truth and it still has to be his choice.

You can't make someone change, they have to do it on their own. It would be great for him to get his faith back but that may not happen. Pray for him and try to be respectful of him and your faith. I'm kind of in your brother's position. I used to be christian, and while I still have many beliefs based on that religion, no religion in the world is purely 100% true. Maybe he's realized that, maybe you will too, I think it's a good thing that he's gone his own way, find your truth and let him find his... but if you're really worried about him, go talk to him. Don't tell him he's going to hell or anything, but ask him what he believes. Sit down and talk to him about it, have a discussion, not an argument.

Maybe the two of you need to read a book about religion together and compare how you interpret the same book. I don't mean the bible. There are plenty of books on different religious topics. If you do this exercise, you will better understand what each other's point of view is exactly. It may not lead to a conversion, but an understanding is more important in my view.

You can't convince him. Information has freed him from empirically unfounded beliefs. He now knows about the universe and his place within it, and does not need a deity to fill in the gaps/give him a purpose. You don't have to agree with that - you just have to respect that it is his choice what he believes, and that he has chosen to believe in observable proof rather than religious theory. If you can't accept this, then your relationship with your brother will suffer, and it won't be his fault.
