What is the gimmick behind these sites that promise you information, but never give it it you?

They say they will tell you (for instance) the five foods you should never eat. But they talk and talk and talk endlessly (never really listened to the end) and never get to the "five food" or whatever information they promised. Are they able to "mine" my computer as long as I am "on" their site? Why do they keep a person hanging on and on but never really divulge any information?

Another question/answer site gave the the answer that the longer you stay there, the long you're looking at the ads posted there. They get paid for the number of people who stay and "see" the ads. That's what I wanted to know; what the sites get out of it. 'Cause you KNOW they're getting something out of it.

Yes, the facts that they "promise" are facts that not many people know, most people are interested in facts to help them in life or just as a reminder for the future, but you are right, there are ads, which make money.
