What is the idea behind the internet sites that offer "five weird tips" but talk and talk and never get to the tips?

They say they will tell you (for instance) the five foods you should never eat. But they talk and talk and talk endlessly (never really listened to the end) and never get to the "five food" or whatever information they promised. Are they able to "mine" my computer as long as I am "on" their site? Why do they keep a person hanging on and on but never really divulge any information?

I'm pretty sure they get money for advertisements while you are on their site, although I'm no genius on the matter. I always assume that is spam, and will eventually ask for my money anyways.

That's the answer I got a AskVille (another question/answer site). I knew it was a gimmick of some kind. Every now and then I could click on one to see how long it takes to get to the point. But I get bored easily, so I never find out. Now that I get what they're up to, not going to bother with that any more. Curiosity satisfied; don't need them any more.

I don't usually click on those. Who knows if they're even accurate? They could be spam too.
