What is the significant effect the existence of a union has on the management of human resources

What is the most significant effect the existence of a union has on the management of human resources?

I would have to disagree with that being I used to belong to the AFL/CIO. Human Resources can communicate with the employees and they know what's in the union contract just like the employees do. The union really comes into play when bargaining occurs. The union is also there to protect the employee from the unfair practices that management may use such as unfair disciplinary actions or threats. dhonskie2 makes it sound like the workers actually work for the union but that's not true. The employees still work for the company but pay the Union to look out for their interests. I still took direction from the company. I was still reviewed by management, etc. The union had no involvement in my day to day job such as job performance, reviews, or promotions.

Probably one of the significant effect in the existence of a labor union in managing human resources is the easy communication between the employees and the management. The management is no longer be communicating to all of the union member but to one person only, which is the official representative of the union.
