While in the midst of your nightmare take control of whatever action is going on (example: if you're being attacked make it that you defeat the attacker; lost in the wild, turn the nightmare in your favor, so that you survive, maybe you had to fight off a bear and win). Your nightmares reflect your life, take control.
Usually, I think about what scares me before I go to sleep. My dreams never have the images that I focus on before sleep. But being in a dark room thinking about all of the things that scare you is not the best situation either.
In the dream book called dream bible of knowledge of dreams and theirs meanings it says that nightmares can actually be ways for your mind to figure out something that might seem impoosible to overcome or defeat and that dreams are so hard to understand and decode because anythung goes rule wise and unless you are just like Einstein you wont be able to decode meanings right away i recommend buying it at books a million extemely because its like going to outerspace in a way for your mind dreams or whatever. And dont even get me statred on outer space and possibilties of other humans in other galaxys now that people discovered that the universe is sooooooooooo sooooooooo much bigger than what scientist originally thought.
I recently had a string of horrible nightmares. I took a sleeping pill and had no dreams that night. I took them for a few days (like three or four) and I didn't have a dream, good or bad. After that, the nightmares stopped.
When you are in the middle the dream... just change it. Say that you are dreaming about someone that is going to kill you. Just picture that person naked or something. make it a comedy or something that you are not afraid of.
Stopping them before they start is certainly good advice. My daughter had horrible dreams so started reading the Bible before bed. Reading God's good promises. I told her to be persistent if it didn't seem to work at first. In less than a week the bad dreams had stopped. It worked so well she wouldn't go to bed without reading it after that, even on sleep overs! Once you have had a bad dream however, do not dwell on it. Tell those nasty, lingering feelings to go away. Play some good cheerful music.
pray before going to sleep and thing about positive things relax your mind, when I was younger I had nightmares all the time because I was kidnapped as a young child v.v and that's what helped me its hard but it works also try to take control of your dreams !

I put on my fave sounds, which happens to be a canoe trip with luscious sounds birds waking in the dawn, of soft paddles in the slow morning river, gliding thru the woods.,blending with the poignant sound of nature unfolding, finishing the day with a crackling fire, the nocturnal, coming awake to live the night, frog & loon serenades ........
Face your fears while u are awake. Nightmares reflect the fears & anxieties that u experience in your life. U may have had an upsetting experience. Never put off getting help with any issues in your life that cause fear or anxiety & always get help from someone qualified if u have trouble coping with a traumatic experience. Just like most of us at some time in our lives, u may have trouble with your self-confidence. Overcome your insecurities by understanding them & understanding yourself. Start by learning how to build your confidence; seek out friends & family who r supportive & mentoring & learn from them. Avoid people who r negative, demeaning & constantly critical of u, they do not help u build confidence & self-esteem, they diminish them. Think about what u r afraid of, & why; get help from others who have overcome fears of their own. Poor exercise, poor diet & poor sleep habits will lead to a reduced personal out-look on life; help yourself in your pursuit of a more confident lifestyle by adopting healthy habits ...healthy body ...healthy mind. Everyone has had fear in their lives. Don't run from your fears, learn from them. Nothing worthwhile in life is easy.
if your room in unclean or unorganised this can have an affecet on your dreams. also dream catcher may work and rethink your dreams to see if theirs something behind it and speak to someoone about it to get it off your chest
I usually have nightmares when I'm stressed out about something. Perhaps try getting out your feelings in some kind of creative way? Try drawing or poetry? Maybe draw your nightmare, or talk about it with someone you trust.
Oh my goodness! I had this problem since I was about 5 years old! Im 15 now. I had horrifying range of nightmares and dreams. I'd wake up shaking, crying or even screaming they were so bad. It even caused insomnia. One day my boyfriend gave me a dream catcher he got from some Indian thing- idk and they went away. It changed my life. So try to get a dream catcher
Think of a blank bit of paper and you'll dream about nothing or think about what scares you most (example you think about you walking into your room and there's a killer behind your door and then you close the door and you scream and then he slits your thoart) and then when you go to sleep you will think about what you love (example rainbows, your boyfriend if you have one and yummy things)
If your cold you can have bad dreams. Also your dreams are your subconscious mind telling you something. It might be your enviroment or try controlling your dreams. Warm milk or soothing sounds help to.
I've always had such horrible nightmares night after night after night. And they were grousome and sometimes very bloody. So I tried out a few of my own tecniques and then came up with my own solution. I would put on a movie (Via sponge bob or something not something scary x,x) sound low, and I would turn off my laptop display or turn my TV away. Music also helped me, I downloaded and MP3 that was rain on river water and that helped me alot. I'm scared of silence as well. Because I'm a very light sleeper and that can PROBABLY cause nightmares cause I hear sounds like mice in the walls or water dripping or dogs barking.
But what I did was put on my movie and fall asleep with it and it would help out tons. Might not for you but try out tons of different things. Put a fan on, movie, music, and don't stress out. Thinking about to much things will cause nightmares too. Like worries. I stopped worrying about everything and let faith handle everything and it stopped nightmares instantly too so. Try it all out. Remember this is all personal experiance.

watch a funny or/and happy movie. keep a cute stuffed animal when you sleep. you can put on some music or fall asleep to a nice movie, that makes you think of happy things and distracts you from the bad and scary. you can also use something like a nightlight, or even leave the lights on in your room.
when I was little i had Nightmares Coz i was foster cared i dreamed about losing my mum and dad forever. When i was 6 i put my foot down i had enough of the dreams so i got a dream catcher. Not only stopped them i was home with my mum and dad again.
Nightmares randomly happen for me. I don't really think there's a way to avoid them. But are you watching scary movies or something? Just don't really get into spooky stuff and it's possible to get rid of them.
